Michael Cleary, who served as professor of management science in the Raj Soin College of Business from 1971 to 1996, passed away Sept. 10.

He originated the large sections of statistics and received the Business College Associates Alumni teaching award. He published articles on issues on quality management, statistical applications and decision sciences in a variety of academic and professional journals. After retiring from Wright State, he remained active with the college and had supported the Professional Pledge in December 2013.

Cleary founded PQ Systems, Inc., which has offices in Dayton, Australia and the United Kingdom. The company helps organizations demonstrate the quality of their products and services using statistical methods and problem-solving tools. PQ Systems was named among the top 25 Places to Work in Dayton in 2014.

He graduated from Norwich University and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He earned his Ph.D. in economics and business management from the University of Nebraska.

Cleary was a charter member and regional director of the Education Division of the American Society for Quality, principal developer of the Transformation of American Industry national training project and a member of the board of directors of Eagle Registrations in Dayton.

He led a planning committee for the U.S.-Japanese Business Conference in Tokyo and presented papers to a variety of audiences in Asia and Europe. He is author of “Data Analysis Handbook using SPSS” and “Statistical Tools for Health Care.”

Cleary was a member of the Partridge Society of Norwich University and served on the university’s board of fellows. He also was a member of the Miami Valley School board of trustees.
