Dayton Daily News: Wright State grad who helped create ‘Black Panther’ movie named alumna of the year

Hannah Beachler, the 2005 Wright State University graduate who has worked on some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, has been named the WSU Alumni Association’s “2018 Alumna of the Year.”

Beachler will visit Wright State on Oct. 5 to receive the award which will be part of the school’s homecoming weekend activities.

Beachler worked as a production designer on Marvel’s “Black Panther” which debuted in theaters earlier this year. She was the first female production designer to work on a Marvel film, according to WSU.

“Black Panther” was released in theaters in February and holds the No. 3 spot for highest grossing movies of all time in the U.S., according to Wright State. The movie earned $370.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend and grossed more than $696 million by Mothers Day.

Before “Black Panther,” Beachler worked as a production designer on the Academy Award-winning movie “Moonlight.” The fillm won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2017. She also worked on Beyonce’s visual album “Lemonade” that originally premiered on HBO, according to Wright State.

“Her accomplishments, combined with her love and generosity toward her alma mater, make her an excellent example of a Wright State alumna that we wanted to recognize,” said Greg Scharer, executive director of alumni relations.
