Yes, language is not just “words." We use language to achieve specific purposes in various settings. ENG 7130 Discourse Analysis helps you develop better insights and become more effective language user to “get things done” in your academic and professional field.

Students in this course bring in sample discourses from business, education, literature, doctor-patient conversations, social media, public speeches, cross-cultural communications, etc. to analyze. They learn major frameworks for analyzing both spoken and written discourse and choose the most suitable one to analyze their sample discourse. Major topics include discourse as social practices, pragmatic principles, discourse and genre, conversation analysis, corpus approaches to discourse analysis, AI-generated discourse, human-machine communication, and multimodal discourse.

The First Destination Survey has the following options for students to report: working, volunteering, continuing education, military service, fellowship, still seeking, taking time off.  

For each option, the survey collects additional information such as (but not limited to) the name and location of the employing organization or educational institution; field of study and degree level or job title, salary and bonus amounts.  

The survey for each graduating class opens one month prior to graduation and remains available for first-time completion or for updating until five months after graduation.
