As the 2021-2022 arts season gets underway, take a chance on Wright State University Theatre whose refreshing lineup includes a classic, rarely staged 1960s musical, a Pulitzer Prize-winning contemporary drama and the best of ABBA.<\/p>\n

The university\u2019s return to in-person productions begins with Ken Ludwig\u2019s hilarious, 1989 Tony Award-nominated farce \u201cLend Me a Tenor\u201d (directed by Joe Deer) followed by ABBA-friendly \u201cMamma Mia!\u201d (directed and choreographed by Greg Hellems), Annie Baker\u2019s off-Broadway community center drama class comedy \u201cCircle Mirror Transformation\u201d (directed by Josh Aaron McCabe in the downstairs, black box Herbst Theatre), Lynn Nottage\u2019s 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-nominated blue-collar drama \u201cSweat\u201d (directed by Wright State alum Shaun Patrick Tubbs), Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s charming opera \u201cThe Gondoliers\u201d (directed by Lee Merrill Hapner in the aforementioned Herbst Theatre), and Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields and Neil Simon\u2019s legendary musical \u201cSweet Charity\u201d (directed by Marya Spring Cordes).<\/p>\n

\u201cIn what will be among our most varied and exciting seasons ever, we\u2019re proud to present plays, dance and musical theatre that excites, challenges, celebrates and restores,\u201d said Joe Deer, Wright State artistic director, in a release.<\/p>\n

In addition, the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures will present three dance concerts (fall student dance concert, emerging choreographers\u2019 concert and spring dance concert) and two motion pictures events (Doc Night and Big Lens Film Festival).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe elephant in the room is COVID,\u201d Deer added. \u201cAt the moment, we\u2019re planning to perform live and in-person, indoors. If things get worse, we\u2019ll adjust and adapt, as always. And, we\u2019ll keep our public informed as any of that changes. Meantime, we\u2019re charging full steam ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
