{"id":115746,"date":"2021-11-17T10:11:27","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T15:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=115746"},"modified":"2022-09-27T12:54:31","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T16:54:31","slug":"explore-the-wright-state-woods-at-annual-runkle-woods-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2021\/11\/17\/explore-the-wright-state-woods-at-annual-runkle-woods-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Explore the Wright State woods at annual Runkle Woods Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_115754\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2021\/11\/17\/learn-about-wright-state-woods-at-annual-runkle-woods-symposium\/55310-erin-pence-burr-oak-tree-10-15-20-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115754\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115754\" class=\"wp-image-115754 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2021\/11\/bur-oak-55310_005-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Burly,&#8221; a bur oak, is the largest tree in the Wright State woods and estimated to be about two centuries old.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ever-changing forest, conservation of archaeological sites, the water quality of streams and recreational activities in the woods are among the topics that will be explored during the fourth annual Wright State University Runkle Woods Symposium.<\/p>\n<p>The Runkle Woods Symposium will be offered both in-person and online on Friday, Nov. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m., in 101 Fawcett Hall and <a href=\"https:\/\/wright.webex.com\/meet\/volker.bahn\">streaming on Webex<\/a>. The event is open to students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The livestream of the symposium will also be recorded and <a href=\"https:\/\/corescholar.libraries.wright.edu\/woods_symposium\/2021\/\">available on CORE Scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The annual Runkle Woods Symposium is an opportunity to explore the Wright State woods with faculty, staff and students from the <a href=\"https:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/\">College of Science and Mathematics<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a> who are involved in research and creative projects in the woods.<\/p>\n<p>Whitney White, a student involved in conservation biology, is part of a group that will give a presentation on its efforts to help keep the woods clean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe symposium is important because it gives students an inside look at all of the research we can do right in our backyard,\u201d said White. \u201cI\u2019ve had classes where we collected data in the woods. It\u2019s much more meaningful when you get to apply the things you learn in class to a real-world system like our woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The symposium is named after James Runkle, Ph.D., professor emeritus of <a href=\"https:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/biology\">biological sciences<\/a>.
