Kevin M. Maguire, who tragically died in a training accident in 1992, has been rededicated.<\/p>\n<p>Family, friends and members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/air-force-rotc\">Aerospace Studies Department (Air Force ROTC Detachment 643<\/a>) gathered Dec. 1 at 102 Millett Hall for the rededication of the Captain Kevin M. Maguire Memorial Cadet Lounge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being able to honor the nobility of Captain McGuire&#8217;s sacrifice is a true privilege,\u201d said Dylan Shope, the Air Force ROTC Cadet Wing commander, who presided over the ceremony. \u201cUniquely, Captain McGuire was in my exact position as Cadet Wing commander 35 years ago, and I am beyond fortunate enough to be able to carry the torch of selflessness and courage that he exemplified. His legacy lives on with the spirit of our Cadet Wing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maguire was killed on Nov. 30, 1992, over Montana in a training accident when the C-141 Starlifter transport plane he was aboard collided in mid-air with another C-141 following completion of an aerial refueling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as Kevin\u2019s family and friends are extremely grateful to the cadets and cadre who have honored my brother\u2019s memory,\u201d said Frank Maguire, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel. \u201cThe detachment was a focus of Kevin\u2019s time at Wright State, and there is no more fitting place to have dedicated to him in honor of his service, courage and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rededication was designed to reinforce Kevin Maguire\u2019s legacy within Wright State and the Air Force ROTC program.<\/p>\n<p>Following the ceremony, Frank Maguire presented a $5,000 scholarship to Allan Wheelock, an Air Force ROTC cadet who is majoring in information technology and cybersecurity, in honor of Maguire\u2019s late brother. Wheelock said he was both shocked and honored to receive the award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis scholarship will definitely help me in pursuit of my college education and dreams of service in the future with the U.S. Air Force,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Following Kevin Maguire\u2019s death, the Maguire family established a memorial scholarship at Wright State in his name. The scholarship fund helps students enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program with financial assistance to complete their college education and go on to serve in the Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_116758\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2021\/12\/10\/millett-hall-room-honoring-late-air-force-capt-kevin-m-maguire-rededicated\/kevin-maguire-scholarship-awardees\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-116758\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116758\" class=\"size-large wp-image-116758\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2021\/12\/Kevin-Maguire-Scholarship-Awardees-508x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-116758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plaque honoring the Air Force ROTC cadets who have received a scholarship in honor of Kevin Maguire.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than 25 students have received scholarships, totaling over $100,000.
