FAIRBORN — A Tipp City eighth grader is now helping a researcher at Wright State University save kids’ lives.<\/p>\n
Sammie Rowland is just an ordinary 14-year-old girl who likes to play sports.<\/p>\n
(After her brother suffered a concussion,) Sammie took a regular football helmet and made modifications.<\/p>\n
“I basically took all the padding out of it and tried different materials for different paddings,” she said. “I found that the best material that I used was silicon shoe inserts.”<\/p>\n
“During the impact the brain moves or rotates inside the skull,” said Doctor Terrain Goswami, Associate Professor at Wright State University. “You may not see anything externally, but internally there\u00a0 is the injury.” He says every year 50,000 people die from concussions and says Sammie’s science fair project could save lives.<\/p>\n
