Wright State University\u2019s men\u2019s club bowling team won the Club National Bowling Championship \u2014 its first such title \u2014 April 9 and 10 in Davenport, Iowa.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor being so far from campus, we had a lot of fans there,\u201d said head coach Jeremy Fleck. \u201cThe parents came out and so did relatives of players from Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tournament was open to the top men\u2019s club bowling teams nationwide. There were 22 teams divided into four pools.<\/p>\n

The Raiders won their pool, advancing to the winners\u2019 bracket. In the final, they were down two games to none in a best-of-five match against the University of Wisconsin-Stout but bowled their way to victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe beat a lot of good teams on the way to the championship,\u201d Fleck said.<\/p>\n

The club team’s previous best finish nationally was second in 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a long time coming, especially for the seniors,\u201d said Fleck, a 2009 Wright State marketing graduate.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 restrictions canceled the 2020 season and abbreviated last year\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the first season that we\u2019re back with a full slate of tournaments and a full club championship,\u201d Fleck said.<\/p>\n

Team members are seniors Andrew Bleakley, Jonathan Ciero and Alex Snowberger; junior Alex Ridings; sophomore Nathan Minzler; and first-year students Angelo Biondo, Brent Shroyer and Nolan Snowberger.<\/p>\n

Fleck said the team was deep in talent. Five at a time bowl in a match, but having three good substitutes who played in other matches kept the team fresh.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople look at bowling as an individual sport, but we truly are a team,\u201d said Ciero, the team’s co-captain. \u201cSome guys had outstanding individual performances, but everybody pitched in, helping each other with encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ciero, the outgoing president of the Student Government Association, added, \u201cThis has been in the making the past three or four years. The men\u2019s team has accrued talent, and we have a great incoming freshman class. This is just the beginning. We\u2019ll have better results next year and continued improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ciero, who is scheduled to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering on April 30, said, \u201cI couldn\u2019t have asked for a better ending to my college experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like titlists in other team sports, these Raider bowlers will get championship rings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were fitted for them before we left Davenport,\u201d Fleck said.<\/p>\n

The rings will feature a green jewel with diamonds and the Raiders logo on the side. The Club National Bowling Program covers the cost.<\/p>\n
