Wright State University Theatre will present the uplifting musical comedy \u201cSister Act\u201d Nov. 4\u201320 in the Festival Playhouse in the Creative Arts Center.<\/p>\n

Performances take place Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for senior citizens and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased online<\/a> or at the Creative Arts Center box office between noon and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n

Based on the 1992 hit film of the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg, \u201cSister Act\u201d received five Tony Award nominations in 2011 including Best Musical.<\/p>\n

\u201cSister Act\u201d tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a 1970s disco diva who finds herself on the run after witnessing a mob killing. Placed into protective custody in a convent, she discovers a sense of her own value and how she can change others\u2019 lives and be changed by them.<\/p>\n

In the convent, Deloris finds a community of women who value her as a woman with an innate understanding of music. And together, Deloris and the nuns discover what sisterhood is, said Greg Hellems, the head of musical theatre<\/a> and the director of Wright State\u2019s production.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t until she\u2019s in the convent working with these women that her dreams start to become realized,\u201d Hellems said. \u201cDeloris starts to see value in who she is as a human and what she has to share. She loses her sense of being valued by show business and recognizes she\u2019s part of a fabulous \u2018sister act.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSister Act\u201d is music directed by F. Wade Russo, with scenery by Pam Knauert Lavarnway, costumes by Zoe Still, lighting by Matthew Benjamin, sound design by James Dunlap and properties by John Lavarnway. The production is co-choreographed by Hellems and dance major Victoria Henwood.<\/p>\n

The production is the final show for Pam Lavarnway, professor of theatre design and technology<\/a>, who is retiring after working on more than 70 productions over the last 31 years at Wright State.<\/p>\n

Lavarnway was the final chair of the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures before the formation of the School of Fine and Performing Arts<\/a> and helped the theatre and dance programs resume live productions during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cPam has been a wonderful colleague and an exciting designer,\u201d said Joe Deer, artistic director and distinguished professor of musical theatre. \u201cShe\u2019s been both a terrific teacher and designer and someone who has given a great deal to our students and the university. We will miss her enormously. But we hope she\u2019ll be back as a guest designer soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the stage, \u201cSister Act\u201d features Alexis Ariana as Deloris Van Cartier, Emma Metzger as Mother Superior, Daniel Rosenbaum as Curtis Jackson, Ben Ohnemus as Officer Eddie Souther, Amy VanDyke as Sister Mary Robert, Melissa Matarrese as Sister Mary Patrick, Taylor Greny as Sister Mary Lazarus, Kevin Lausche as Monsignor O\u2019Hara, Alex Tischer as Joey, Tommy Thams as TJ, Nick Salazar as Pablo, Trinity Wolff as Michelle, Kendra Lodewyk as Tina, Sara Ashleigh Touhy as Mary Martin-of-Tours and Alex Muhlenkamp as Mary Theresa.<\/p>\n

The Ensemble includes Dani Grace Nissen, Lindsay Bates, Emma Massey, Claire Northcut, Julia Brosas, Aliya Pimental. Alyson Kessinger, Anderson Rothwell, XiaoNi Denker, James Newton, Blaise Duncan-Bevans and Aidan Fracker. The swings are Megan Murray and Cate Lightbody.<\/p>\n
