{"id":135173,"date":"2023-02-13T10:49:23","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T15:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=135173"},"modified":"2023-02-13T10:49:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T15:49:25","slug":"wright-state-graduate-students-to-test-communication-skills-in-new-timed-thesis-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/02\/13\/wright-state-graduate-students-to-test-communication-skills-in-new-timed-thesis-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State graduate students to test communication skills in new, timed thesis competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/02\/13\/wright-state-graduate-students-to-test-communication-skills-in-new-timed-thesis-competition\/graduate-programs-and-honors-studies-new-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-135179\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-135179\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2023\/02\/Graduate-Programs-and-Honors-Studies-new-508x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Wright State University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/graduate-school\">graduate<\/a> students working on their thesis or dissertation face a common challenge \u2014 explaining complex and nuanced subject matter in simple and concise terms that novices can understand in a short amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>That is the premise behind the Wright State College of Graduate Programs and Honors Studies\u2019 inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/graduate-school\/three-minute-thesis-dissertation-competition\">Three Minute Thesis\/Dissertation competition, or 3MT<\/a>, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Student Union Endeavour Room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow to explain your research ideas simply and in a way that is engaging to your audience is a universal challenge for graduate students,\u201d said Shu Schiller, Ph.D., interim dean of the college. \u201cIt can be very hard to do. That\u2019s why this is such a good exercise for these students to engage in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The average master\u2019s thesis or doctoral dissertation is tens of thousands of words in length and would take several hours to read aloud. Students participating in the 3MT competition will be allotted three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be a great opportunity to learn from the best and craft an effective \u2018elevator speech,\u2019\u201d said Schiller.<\/p>\n<p>The graduate academic affairs committee evaluated student submissions and selected 11 students to compete in the 3MT. Students will test their ability to efficiently and effectively communicate their thesis or dissertation before a panel of expert judges.<\/p>\n<p>The panel will evaluate and select one first-place, two second-place and three third-place winners.
