{"id":136084,"date":"2023-03-16T09:14:14","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T13:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=136084"},"modified":"2023-03-17T15:25:52","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T19:25:52","slug":"them-images-of-separation-to-be-displayed-at-wright-states-stein-galleries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/03\/16\/them-images-of-separation-to-be-displayed-at-wright-states-stein-galleries\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018THEM: Images of Separation\u2019 to be displayed at Wright State\u2019s Stein Galleries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The traveling exhibition &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/art-galleries\/them-images-of-separation-97716\">THEM: Images of Separation<\/a>&#8221; will be on display at the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries in Wright State University\u2019s Creative Arts Center from March 18 to 25.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy Snipe Ph.D., professor of political science at Wright State, said the exhibition is a prelude to this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/02\/23\/on-the-road-wright-state-students-will-learn-about-ohios-role-in-civil-rights-movement\/\">Civil Rights Pilgrimage<\/a>, which takes place March 31 to April 1.<\/p>\n<p>John Feldmeier, Ph.D., professor of political science, has written &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1n-I-KbVKdmZFEeve3OqcGJSOTdRcXC0G\/edit\">A Word of Caution, Consideration and Hope<\/a>,&#8221; a powerful essay, or content warning, about the exhibition. The essay will be made available to visitors before viewing the exhibition and online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTHEM\u201d is a follow-up to \u201cHateful Things,\u201d an exhibition comprised of artifacts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferris.edu\/htmls\/news\/jimcrow\/index.htm\">Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia<\/a> at Ferris State University. Both exhibits were curated by Ferris State administrators David Pilgrim, Ph.D., vice president for diversity and inclusion and professor of social sciences, and Carrie Weis, fine arts gallery and museum director.<\/p>\n<p>Pilgrim said that \u201cTHEM\u201d responds to questions he received from people who viewed \u201cHateful Things,\u201d which focused specifically on imagery demeaning to African Americans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the past, we had people ask why we did not have objects that dealt with groups other than African Americans. For this show, we took our direction from Martin Luther King&#8217;s famous quote, \u2018Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,\u2019\u201d said Pilgrim.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_136086\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/03\/15\/them-images-of-separation-to-be-displayed-at-wright-states-stein-galleries\/18798-jim-hannah-art-professor-glen-cebulash-in-stein-galleries-3-20-17-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-136086\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136086\" class=\"size-large wp-image-136086\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2023\/03\/Stein-Galleries-18798_017-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-136086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;THEM: Images of Separation,&#8221; a traveling exhibition from Ferris State University, will be on display at the Stein Galleries from March 18 to 25.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Through six three-dimensional and 32 framed pieces, some with multiple items such as postcards, \u201cTHEM\u201d tackles some of the most contentious, cultural hot-button issues, including anti-Arab sentiment, Holocaust denial, \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d and immigration. The exhibition also includes items demeaning to African Americans, but that is only a part of its larger picture.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be two presentations connected with the exhibition, including a student panel on Monday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/art-galleries\">Stein Galleries<\/a>. Panelists will discuss topics relevant to the exhibit&#8217;s content. Pilgrim will join virtually to speak about the exhibit and provide background on the museum.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, March 21, at 5 p.m. there will be a screening of Spike Lee\u2019s film \u201cBamboozled\u201d in 280 Creative Arts Center.
