Bri Chan has engineered something unusual. She has two majors that at first blush are diametrically opposed \u2014 but they meet her two entirely different but similarly strong passions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"2\">Chan, who is from Groveport, Ohio, is a dual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/fine-and-performing-arts\/bachelor-of-fine-arts-in-dance\">dance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/biomedical-industrial-and-human-factors-engineering\/bachelor-of-science-in-biomedical-engineering\">biomedical engineering major<\/a>\u00a0at Wright State University. The reason is simple: Wright State was the perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p data-index=\"2\">How did these twin passions develop? \u201cWhen I was little, my babysitter said I loved to dance around,\u201d Chan said. \u201cMy mother enrolled me in dance classes when I was 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-index=\"2\">As she grew, so did her involvement with movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">\u201cI was in cheerleading, then gymnastics, then dance. I started with ballet. I enjoyed the feeling of getting to move,\u201d she said. \u201cAs I got older, dance became a way to express my emotions. I used it as a form to tell a story. That\u2019s how I fell in love with dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"13\">Chan credits her mom, Carmen Chan, a mechanical engineer, for inspiring her passion for biomedical engineering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"14\">\u201cGrowing up, I went with her to work sometimes,\u201d Chan said. \u201cI liked the engineering side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"17\">It was a project in high school that introduced her to the biology side of engineering and cinched its place in her heart. She said her mom\u2019s co-worker had a three-legged dog. As a science skills project, Chan designed a prosthetic fourth leg for the dog, which she already loved.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_138639\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138639\" class=\"size-large wp-image-138639\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2023\/05\/Bri-Chan-65226_038-508x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"484\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-138639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bri Chan plans to teach dance and later focus on her engineering career.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"18\">\u201cIt was a success,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I fell in love with the medical side of engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"19\">When it came time to pick a college, Chan wanted to major in biomedical engineering while also focusing on dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"20\">\u201cWright State has one of the best dance programs in Ohio, and it was close to home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"21\">Wright State checked all the boxes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"22\">Chan is between her junior and senior years in dance and will enter the third year of the biomedical engineering program this fall, when she said the courses will begin to intensify. Her plan is to eventually teach dance, and later focus on her science field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"23\">\u201cBri has one of the most-uncanny abilities to multitask I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d said Gina Walther, associate professor and head of dance at Wright State. \u201cShe is fully committed in every dance class, bringing both her artistic vulnerability and physical strength into every day. She is open to try anything and smart enough to figure out even the most complicated dance moves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"24\">Walther added, \u201cOn a personal note, she is kind, empathetic and beloved by her faculty and peers. I\u2019m so proud of Bri and feel lucky she\u2019s a part of our Dance Program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"25\">While Wright State is lucky to have Chan, Chan is happy to be at Wright State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"26\">\u201cWright State is a really good school,\u201d Chan said. \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering-computer-science.wright.edu\/biomedical-industrial-and-human-factors-engineering\/bachelor-of-science-in-biomedical-engineering\">Biomedical Engineering Program<\/a>\u00a0is one of the best in Ohio. The professors in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/fine-and-performing-arts\/bachelor-of-fine-arts-in-dance\">Dance Program<\/a>\u00a0are amazing.
