{"id":140090,"date":"2023-08-04T09:41:04","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T13:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=140090"},"modified":"2023-08-04T10:17:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T14:17:48","slug":"lab-learners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/08\/04\/lab-learners\/","title":{"rendered":"Lab learners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first Dayton bioManufacturing Awareness and Discovery Experience (DaytonMADE) camp took place in Wright State University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/biology\">Biological Sciences<\/a> lab for two separate two-week sessions. The first session took place from June 5 to June 16 and the second from July 17 and to July 28.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe camps are aimed at serving students that may not have had previous experience in STEM or STEM outreach in the area,\u201d Michael Schmidt, Ph.D., an assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/biochemistry-and-molecular-biology\/bachelor-of-science-in-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology\">biochemistry and molecular biology<\/a> at Wright State who served as an instructor at the DaytonMADE camp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twenty-three Dayton-area high school students learned about various biotechnology techniques, met with scientists in the biotechnology field, toured a biomanufacturing facility and received a glimpse of what it\u2019s like to be a Wright State student.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wanted to try out the waters and see if I liked chemistry and biomanufacturing,\u201d said Salah Naarouf, a senior at The Dayton Regional STEM School. \u201cIt\u2019s a great experience, and I fell in love with this campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Registration and transportation to and from the camp were free.
