Williams, associate professor of neuroscience, cell biology, and physiology at Wright State, for her efforts to mentor students from underrepresented groups in the physiological sciences.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"1\">Clintoria R. Williams, Ph.D., associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/neuroscience-cell-biology-and-physiology\">neuroscience, cell biology, and physiology<\/a>\u00a0at Wright State University, is the 2024 recipient of the A. Clifford Barger Underrepresented Minority Mentorship Award from the American Physiological Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"2\">The American Physiological Society is a community of researchers, educators and trainees in physiology and related disciplines working to advance understanding of life and health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"1\">The A. Clifford Barger Underrepresented Minority Mentorship Award promotes the society\u2019s goal of broadening diversity among physiologists by identifying outstanding mentors who significantly impact diversity in physiology. The award recognizes mentoring as a highly valued professional activity that merits a high-level award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"2\">The award committee was impressed with Williams\u2019 leadership, guidance and mentorship of students and trainees from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in the physiological sciences. The selectors noted her accomplishments in the number of mentees and evidence of successful outcomes for her research trainees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"3\">Williams will be recognized at the American Physiology Summit in Long Beach, California, next April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"4\">Williams was nominated by one of her former mentees, Adaku Ume, an M.D.\/Ph.D. student who worked in Williams\u2019 lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"6\">Ume, who received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/01\/17\/fellowships-abound-for-boonshoft-school-of-medicine-student\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/01\/17\/fellowships-abound-for-boonshoft-school-of-medicine-student\/\">two prestigious research fellowships<\/a>\u00a0last year, coordinated nomination materials from Williams\u2019 department chair, mentors, colleagues, and current and former undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"8\">\u201cIt was a pleasure to lead the charge in nominating Dr. Williams for this distinction. Mentorship is her love language, and she should be recognized for her continuous efforts,\u201d said Ume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">Other physiology and neuroscience students Williams has mentored have also been recognized for their achievements in their field of study in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">Last summer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/31\/wright-state-physiology-and-neuroscience-students-excel-in-nih-internship-program\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/31\/wright-state-physiology-and-neuroscience-students-excel-in-nih-internship-program\/\">Adeline Nshuti and Kelia McMichael<\/a>\u00a0excelled in prestigious internships with the National Institutes of Health Short-Term Research Experience Program to Unlock Potential (STEP-UP) program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">Kelia McMichael, a physiology and neuroscience student, received three prestigious awards for research presentations she made at two national meetings last year. These included the Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation Award at the Conference for Black in Physiology, the Outstanding Undergraduate Abstract Award and the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award at the American Physiology Summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"12\">In 2022, Williams received a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2022\/11\/28\/wright-state-renal-physiologist-clintoria-williams-receives-2m-award-for-chronic-kidney-disease-research\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2022\/11\/28\/wright-state-renal-physiologist-clintoria-williams-receives-2m-award-for-chronic-kidney-disease-research\/\">four-year, nearly $2 million award<\/a>\u00a0from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to further her research aimed at identifying novel therapeutic approaches effective for chronic kidney disease, filling critical gaps in therapeutic knowledge of zinc supplementation and mechanistic understanding of zinc-sensitive kidney pathways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"15\">She also received the 2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2022\/08\/02\/wright-state-renal-physiologist-clintoria-williams-receives-prestigious-kidney-research-grant\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2022\/08\/02\/wright-state-renal-physiologist-clintoria-williams-receives-prestigious-kidney-research-grant\/\">Carl W.
