Joey Monda ’12 won a Tony Award as a producer of \u201cA Strange Loop,” which won Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical at the 75th annual Tony Awards. Monda is a co-producer of Broadway’s “Hadestown.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Wright State musical theater graduate Joey Monda is excited that \u201cHadestown\u201d has made its way to Dayton.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s co-producer won his first Tony award for this show, and says although \u201cHadestown\u201d premiered in Vermont in 2006, \u201cit always feels like it was written for our specific moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monda believes the themes of \u201cHadestown\u201d increase in relevancy with each passing day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt tells the universal story of \u2018art versus economics,\u2019 of the need for human relationships and the importance of fighting for what you believe in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His Wright State University education, Monda believes, provided the foundation for his understanding of theater as a collaborative art form and also provided an environment that fostered his variety of theatrical interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was able to understand and appreciate not just what was going on onstage but all of the jobs that it took to put on a production,\u201d he said, adding that an important part of the producer\u2019s role is bringing together a variety of others \u2014 from directors and writers to advertisers and publicists.<\/p>\n

Monda, who has also won Tonys for \u201cThe Inheritance\u201d and \u201cA Strange Loop,\u201d said he\u2019s always on the lookout for shows that have a message for the times.<\/p>\n

At the moment, he is serving as a lead producer for ” Days of Wine and Roses\u201d and a co-producer for \u201dThe Notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n

But \u201cHadestown,\u201d which earned eight awards on Tony night in 2019, will always hold a special place in his heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my first time at the Tonys,\u201d Monda said. \u201cIt was a thrilling night with one thrill after another.\u201d<\/p>\n
