{"id":14815,"date":"2012-07-30T15:48:53","date_gmt":"2012-07-30T19:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=14815"},"modified":"2015-03-06T09:23:32","modified_gmt":"2015-03-06T14:23:32","slug":"award-winning-air-force-scientist-has-wright-state-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/07\/30\/award-winning-air-force-scientist-has-wright-state-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-winning Air Force scientist has Wright State ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14816\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/07\/Saber-Hussain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14816\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14816\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/07\/Saber-Hussain-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Saber Hussain, Ph.D.\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saber Hussain<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of seven scientists and engineers receiving the Air Force Research Laboratory\u2019s highest honor this year has ties to Wright State University\u2019s Boonshoft School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>AFRL last week announced its 2012 AFRL Fellows, the organization\u2019s most prestigious honor for its nationwide scientific workforce.\u00a0 Among the honorees are Saber Hussain, Ph.D., a senior toxicologist with AFRL\u2019s 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.<\/p>\n<p>Hussain is also an associate professor in Wright State\u2019s Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is AFRL\u2019s top award, given to those who\u2019ve shown superior research and development expertise during their years in the lab. It\u2019s an incredible honor,\u201d Jennifer Ricklin, Ph.D., AFRL\u2019s chief technologist and overseer of the Fellows program, said in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>Besides formal recognition, the Fellows award brings with it $150,000 per year for two years in additional research funding.<\/p>\n<p>The award announcement described Hussain as a leader in the emerging fields of nanobioeffects and nanotoxicology. He developed a state-of-the-art nanocharacterization laboratory for toxicology studies, the first of its kind within the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>AFRL said the lab addresses the knowledge gap in the human and environmental health implications of nanomaterials.<\/p>\n<p>AFRL is the Air Force\u2019s center of science and technology, responsible for $2 billion in Air Force research and an additional $1.7 billion from customers such as other federal agencies.
