Hudgins, courtesy of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Between having a father who\u2019s an aeronautical engineer and attending a university named for the Wright brothers, Elizabeth \u201cLizzie\u201d Dardis seems almost destined to follow a path linked to aviation.<\/p>\n<p>No surprise, then, that the Wright State University graduate student in public history is over the moon about a 10-week internship with the Smithsonian Institution\u2019s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been interested in aviation history all my life,\u201d said Dardis, who received her bachelor\u2019s degree in history from The Ohio State University in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Internships aren\u2019t lucrative, but Dardis said this is a dream job for someone with her interests. \u201cNot only is the Smithsonian the biggest and one of the most respected museum organizations in the world, but the Air and Space Museum specifically is right up my alley,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14895\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Elizabeth-Dardis-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14895\" class=\" wp-image-14895 \" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Elizabeth-Dardis-3-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Elizabeth Dardis in the National Air and Space Museum's Garber facility\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dardis said this is a dream job for someone with her interests.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dardis is working with the Collections Division at the National Museum\u2019s Garber Facility in Suitland, Maryland. Her work involves preparing small objects for the move from Garber, built as a temporary storage location in 1970, to the new permanent collections facility at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Dardis assesses the conditions of old air and space objects, ranging from radio and antenna equipment to aviators\u2019 personal items, to evaluate the proper storage needed.<\/p>\n<p>Some parts might seem mundane\u2014an old radio coil, for example\u2014until Dardis researches the stories behind them. The radio coil turned out to be from air pioneer Charles Lindbergh\u2019s personal airplane.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Elizabeth-Dardis-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14925 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Elizabeth-Dardis-2-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Elizabeth Dardis in the National Air and Space Museum's Garber facility\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>\u201cGetting an internship at the National Air and Space Museum or any Smithsonian museum is definitely coveted. There\u2019s a lot of competition for them from students across the country and probably around the world,\u201d said Dawne Dewey, director of public history and head of special collections and archives.<\/p>\n<p>Paid internships are \u201cvery hard to find anywhere these days,\u201d Dewey said. The Smithsonian\u2019s provides a stipend that allows Dardis to cover her living expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Dardis said an undergraduate internship at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base helped qualify her for the Smithsonian work. \u201cThe National Museum\u00a0is an important community partner with our program.
