{"id":149295,"date":"2024-04-12T09:52:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T13:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=149295"},"modified":"2024-04-12T09:57:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T13:57:50","slug":"wright-states-annual-spring-dance-concert-showcases-regions-vibrant-dance-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2024\/04\/12\/wright-states-annual-spring-dance-concert-showcases-regions-vibrant-dance-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State\u2019s annual Spring Dance Concert showcases region\u2019s vibrant dance community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_149300\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2024\/04\/12\/wright-states-annual-spring-dance-concert-showcases-regions-vibrant-dance-community\/wsu-dc-2023-1731\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-149300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149300\" class=\"size-large wp-image-149300\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2024\/04\/wsu-dc-2023-1731-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-149300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wright State Dance Ensemble\u2019s Spring Dance Concert will feature 26 dance majors performing seven diverse and dynamic pieces April 18\u201321 in the Festival Playhouse in the Creative Arts Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Audiences can watch Wright State University dance students shine in a variety of stunning choreography from jazz to contemporary ballet at the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/fine-and-performing-arts\/dance-productions\/wright-state-dance-98351\">Spring Dance Concert 2024<\/a> from April 18 to 21.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will feature 26 dance majors performing seven diverse and dynamic pieces by Gina Gardner-Walther, associate professor of dance and head of dance at Wright State, and renowned guest choreographers Ray Mercer, Jennifer Sydor and Hannah Williamson.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will also feature the Dance Ensemble\u2019s partner training companies, the Dayton Ballet Studio Company and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company 2, highlighting the region\u2019s vibrant and diverse dance community.<\/p>\n<p>Performances take place on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m.; Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. in the Festival Playhouse in the Creative Arts Center.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for people 60 and older and $5 for students. Wright State students can attend the April 18 concert for free by showing their Wright1 Card.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wrightliberalarts.universitytickets.com\/w\/\">Tickets can be purchased online<\/a> or by calling the theatre box office at 937-775-2500.<\/p>\n<p>The Spring Dance Concert is inspired by collaborations between dance and community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so proud to present these fierce choreographers and dancers,\u201d Walther said. \u201cDance fills the heart with joy and expresses emotions we cannot put into words. Our students receive rigorous training and individual attention allowing them to push the boundaries of dance. Come out and enjoy every step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray Mercer\u2019s new work \u201cLet It Rain\u201d is a dance tour de force and beautifully theatrical. It was inspired by relationships observed in the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer is in his 21st season as a dancer and fight captain in \u201cThe Lion King\u201d on Broadway. An innovative director and choreographer, he has created works for premiere dance companies including AileyII, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and the New Jersey Ballet.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Sydor\u2019s \u201cStone Cold\u201d is an abstract retelling of the myth of Medusa that elevates the fate of the Gorgon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2024\/04\/12\/wright-states-annual-spring-dance-concert-showcases-regions-vibrant-dance-community\/wsu-dc-2023-1599\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-149297\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-149297\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2024\/04\/wsu-dc-2023-1599-508x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a>\u201cMyth is a lens in which to touch upon themes in our current world: female empowerment, autonomy and the journey we take to identify what drives us in life,\u201d Sydor said.<\/p>\n<p>Sydor has enjoyed a 20-year career as a freelance dancer in New York City, including 18 seasons with The Metropolitan Opera Ballet. She is also artistic director of the Dayton Dance Initiative and a part-time faculty member at Wright State, Sinclair Community College and the Dayton Ballet School.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Williamson\u2019s \u201cnight light.\u201d explores nightlife in all its different shades set to the music by Nancy Sinatra and The Who. Williamson, who received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Wright State in 2017, is a company member, rehearsal director and choreographer of Mutual Dance Theatre in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will also feature \u201cWhat Comes From Within\u201d by Macy Perry, a senior dance major at Wright State.
