Tilly Evans-Krueger received the 2024 Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway Musical in \u201cThe Outsiders.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

The 77th annual Tony Awards, airing Sunday, June 16, live from Lincoln Center in New York City, will notably incorporate four connections to Wright State University.<\/p>\n

2014 Wright State University dance alumna Tilly Evans-Krueger is the associate choreographer and an ensemble member of \u201cThe Outsiders,\u201d nominated for 12 Tonys including Best Musical and Best Choreography. In addition to performing with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company while studying dance, her credits include Broadway\u2019s \u201cMoulin Rouge!,\u201d off-Broadway\u2019s \u201cThe Lucky Ones,\u201d \u201cRent Live!,\u201d the film version of \u201cIn the Heights,\u201d and Ariana Grande\u2019s music video \u201cyes, and?\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Outsiders,\u201d movingly led by Tony nominee Brody Grant as soul-searching Ponyboy, Evans-Krueger is among the working-class Greasers who brings fierce physicality to an extraordinarily choreographed Act 2 rumble against the privileged Socs.<\/p>\n

In addition Evans-Krueger received the 2024 Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway Show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so crazy to be recognized as a dancer \u2014 it doesn\u2019t happen very often,\u201d Evans-Krueger said in her acceptance speech. \u201c(Dancers) are the hardest-working people ever and the most selfless people. We do this because we truly love it… And I live by the quote by Kendrick Lamar: If I\u2019m generous at heart, I don\u2019t need recognition. The way I\u2019m rewarded, well, that\u2019s God\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you watch Tilly, the passion to move oozes out of every pore,\u201d said Marya Spring Cordes, faculty member, Associate Chair and the Artistic Director of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Wright State.<\/p>\n

The electrifying production of \u201cThe Who\u2019s Tommy,\u201d nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, features 2022 Wright State University musical theatre alumna Tassy Kirbas in the ensemble and as the Acid Queen understudy. In 2022 Kirbas delivered a phenomenal portrayal of Charity Hope Valentine in Wright State\u2019s production of \u201cSweet Charity,\u201d directed by Cordes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWSU audiences knew as they watched Tassy\u2019s triple threat prowess as the lead role in \u2018Sweet Charity\u2019 only two short years ago that we were witnessing greatness,\u201d Cordes recalled. \u201cIt was my great privilege to direct Tassy as we created the production together. Her spirit twinkles through her eyes in a way that lights up any room and any stage from Ohio to NYC.\u201d<\/p>\n
