{"id":15246,"date":"2012-08-17T10:19:58","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T14:19:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=15246"},"modified":"2022-09-28T15:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T19:41:24","slug":"wright-state-alumnus-digs-up-comedy-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/08\/17\/wright-state-alumnus-digs-up-comedy-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State alumnus digs up comedy gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15250\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/08\/17\/wright-state-alumnus-digs-up-comedy-gold\/ryan-comedy-hs-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15250\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15250\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Ryan-Comedy-HS1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot photo of Ryan Singer.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On August 24, Ryan Singer will be hosting Flick My Clip, a comedy shorts festival that will be a part of the FilmDayton Festival.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Armed with a powerful wit and a desire to make people laugh, Ryan Singer has been a success as a comedian since his graduation from Wright State University in 2002 \u2014 and that\u2019s no joke!<\/p>\n<p>Singer\u2019s quirky personality and unique sense of humor have won the comedian numerous awards, guest appearances on popular radio shows and acclaim in the comedy world. \u201cSome may call it immature, but I prefer the term \u2018childlike,\u2019\u201d Singer said. \u201cI have somehow managed to avoid becoming an adult in so many ways, that it keeps me young inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine recently mentioned Singer as a comedian \u201cWho Should Be Big.\u201d His debut album, <em>How to Get High Without Drugs<\/em>, was selected by <em>Punchline<\/em> <em>Magazine<\/em> as one of the Top 10 Comedy CDs of 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Humbled by the success of his first album, Singer said the praise he received was very unexpected. \u201cOf course, I was proud of my work and thought that I had recorded a pretty good album that was representative of the type of comedian I had become to that point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Singer was one of four finalists in CMT\u2019s <em>Next Big Comic <\/em>contest. He has been heard on XM\/Sirius Satellite Radio, has appeared on the nationally syndicated radio show <em>Bob &amp; Tom<\/em> and was a regional finalist in Comedy Central\u2019s <em>Open Mic Fight.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15249\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/08\/17\/wright-state-alumnus-digs-up-comedy-gold\/ryan-singer-aspen-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15249\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15249\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15249\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/08\/Ryan-Singer-Aspen1-260x195.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Ryan Singer on stage in Aspen, Colorado.\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Singer on stage in Aspen, Colorado.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a kid, Singer found that the best way to get adults to like him was to make them laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started becoming focused on getting laughs from people and I guess it kind of became an obsession that stays with me to this day,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure there will ever be a more satisfying laugh than the ones I got as a 10-year-old kid from adults. I keep trying, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singer attributes much of his success and development as both a person and a comedian to his experiences at Wright State.<\/p>\n<p>Singer graduated with a bachelor\u2019s degree in English with a concentration in creative writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy English classes, specifically my writing classes, helped me find my way through the forest of words as I searched for my voice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Singer said that the material assigned became an integral part of his act. The fiction Singer wrote in his classes helped him formulate his stand-up routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many ways, my classes at Wright State were my first audiences,\u201d Singer said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Singer currently resides in Los Angeles, he holds the southern Ohio region near and dear. Throughout his tour across the country, Singer makes a point to frequently visit the area for a gig. In fact, on August 24, Singer will be hosting Flick My Clip, a comedy shorts festival that will be a part of the FilmDayton Festival. Singer created Flick My Clip as a way to connect the two separate but similar worlds of comedians and filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Singer encourages all aspiring comedians and filmmakers to submit their comedy shorts and to participate in the rapidly growing festival.
