Legend challenged students to find their passion and make a difference in the world, asking them to \u201cfigure out what you believe in and then advocate for it.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

Nine-time Grammy winner John Legend urged Wright State\u2019s incoming freshmen to consider their education \u201ca gift.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember what it was like to be in your shoes,\u201d said Legend, speaking at the university\u2019s Freshman Convocation and assuring the Class of 2016 that it\u2019s OK to be both excited and nervous.<\/p>\n

As the event\u2019s keynote speaker, Legend spoke about the challenges faced by the United States in the world of education. He cited the statistic that 50 percent of high school dropouts come from just 15 percent of schools, most of them located in the communities most in need of what he called \u201cthe transformative impact of education.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation gives you control of your own destiny,\u201d he said. \u201cYou will be equipped and empowered with the tools you need to succeed in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legend also challenged the students to find their passion and make a difference in the world, asking them to \u201cfigure out what you believe in and then advocate for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his keynote address, Legend took questions from the audience and performed three songs.<\/p>\n

Wright State President David R. Hopkins also welcomed the university\u2019s newest Raiders: \u201cI look forward to shaking your hands at your graduation because when you get to that moment, you will have achieved something great.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 3,600 students will begin their higher education at Wright State this fall; more than 2,400 of them are coming directly from high school.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach one of you comes with a dream\u2014and if you don\u2019t have one, get one!\u201d said Hopkins. \u201cWright State is dedicated to making you as successful as you want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
