{"id":157308,"date":"2025-03-10T09:49:38","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T13:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=157308"},"modified":"2025-03-10T09:50:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T13:50:17","slug":"wright-states-model-un-team-shines-at-annual-dayton-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/03\/10\/wright-states-model-un-team-shines-at-annual-dayton-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State\u2019s Model UN team shines at annual Dayton conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_157313\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/03\/10\/wright-states-model-un-team-shines-at-annual-dayton-conference\/wright-state-at-dayton-model-un-conference\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-157313\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157313\" class=\"size-large wp-image-157313\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2025\/03\/Wright-State-at-Dayton-Model-UN-Conference-508x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-157313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State University students won nine committee awards, two best-in-committee paper awards and the best overall conference paper at the Dayton Model United Nations Conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State University students made a strong showing at the 32nd Dayton Model United Nations Conference at Sinclair Community College, earning an impressive 11 awards.<\/p>\n<p>Competing against four other Ohio universities, <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/social-sciences-and-international-studies\/model-united-nations-program\">Wright State\u2019s Model United Nations team<\/a> showcased diplomacy and leadership as they represented various nations in three committees.<\/p>\n<p>Wright State students received nine committee awards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Murphy Van Balen<\/strong> \u2014 Outstanding Delegate, Simulated Security Council<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chloe Johnston<\/strong> \u2014 Distinguished Delegate, Simulated Security Council<\/li>\n<li><strong>Liene Craft<\/strong> \u2014 Distinguished Delegate, Environment Assembly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preston Holton, Connor Wilson and Katelyn O\u2019Connell<\/strong> \u2014 Honorable Mention, Environment Assembly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Siobhan O\u2019Boyle, CC Davis and Ala Hagi<\/strong> \u2014 Honorable Mentions, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, Abrar Salem and Chloe Johnston were recognized for their research and writing, winning best-in-committee paper awards. Johnston was also recognized for producing the best overall conference paper.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s head delegates are graduate students Eliza Hendrix and Brad Klingbeil and its faculty advisors Vaughn Shannon, Ph.D., professor of political science and director of the Master of Arts in International and Comparative Politics program, and Liam Anderson, Ph.D., professor of political science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dayton Model UN Conference offers invaluable experience for our students as we prepare them for the national conference in New York in April,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cIt was challenging for our first-year students this year as we had only two weeks of preparation before the Dayton conference. But we are proud of the way the team as a whole responded, particularly our first-year students, several of whom came away with conference awards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State students and alumni often play a role in staffing the Dayton conference. This year, Hanzade Aslan, a graduate biomedical engineering student, served as the secretary general, and Wright State graduates Lilith Holloway served as the deputy secretary general and Rama Shtaieh was the conference coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>The Dayton conference serves as a warmup for the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from April 5\u201311, where Wright State\u2019s team will represent the Russian Federation. The team has won a team delegation award at the National Model U.N. Conference for 44 consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to be proud of our students, especially this year with such a short window between the start of the semester and the early conference,\u201d Shannon said. \u201cOur students are eager to take their experience to the National Model UN Conference with the challenge of representing Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State\u2019s Model UN program will host a <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/social-sciences-and-international-studies\/wrightmun-high-school-model-united-nations-conference\">High School Model United Nations Conference<\/a> on Saturday, April 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gandhi Auditorium in White Hall on the Dayton Campus.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Wright State\u2019s faculty, students and alumni, the conference is open to area high school model United Nations clubs.
