{"id":158327,"date":"2025-04-10T15:50:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T19:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=158327"},"modified":"2025-04-10T15:50:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T19:50:17","slug":"wright-state-alum-emily-morgans-book-reaches-new-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/10\/wright-state-alum-emily-morgans-book-reaches-new-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State alum Emily Morgan\u2019s book reaches new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Authors sometimes have their books read aloud to an audience in bookstores, libraries and special gatherings, but Emily Morgan had one of hers read in a setting out of this world, literally: the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>Her picture book \u201cNext Time You See a Sunset\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/storytimefromspace.com\/next-time-you-see-a-sunset-2\/\">read by astronaut Mark Vande Hei while in orbit<\/a> as part of Storytime from Space. The initiative aims to inspire children by combining storytelling with science education in an out-of-this-world setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is <em>the<\/em> coolest thing that ever happened to me,\u201d Morgan said.<\/p>\n<p>Another cool thing happened to her: She received the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/health-education-human-services.wright.edu\/\">College of Health, Education and Human Services<\/a> Outstanding Alumna Award from the Wright State University Alumni Association.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan graduated from Wright State in 1995 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/health-education-human-services.wright.edu\/teacher-education\/bachelor-of-science-in-education-elementary-education-p-5\">bachelor\u2019s degree in elementary education<\/a>. She began her teaching career in middle school science at Northridge Local Schools and later taught elementary science lab at Mason City Schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScience\u201d is the keyword when discussing Morgan\u2019s passion. She is driven to connect students with the wonders of science and nature. In doing so, \u201cI developed a love of picture books,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She became an author with Picture-Perfect Science Lessons, which combines science and literacy in engaging science-related picture books.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan writes the \u201cNext Time You See\u201d picture book series for children. Each book features a natural object, in the case of the book read in space, a sunset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter reading it, the next time you see it, you\u2019ll see it in a whole new way,\u201d she said of each of her book\u2019s focal points.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_158334\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/10\/wright-state-alum-emily-morgans-book-reaches-new-heights\/71721-kathy-kuntz-alumni-achievement-awards-2-7-25-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-158334\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158334\" class=\"size-large wp-image-158334\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2025\/04\/Emily-Morgan-71721_035-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-158334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Morgan received the 2025 College of Health, Education and Human Services Outstanding Alumna Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She has led Picture-Perfect Science workshops at schools, universities and conferences nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan has also authored 19 books for the National Science Teaching Association and one with Corwin Press. Her works include resources for educators, such as \u201cBalance Screen Time with Green Time: Connecting Students with Nature,\u201d which promotes outdoor learning experiences.<\/p>\n<p>She is a consultant for the Ohio Afterschool Network, coordinating the Moonshot Ohio Initiative, which strives to increase afterschool and summer science, technology, engineering and mathematics programming for students.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan is also a board member of Lakota Robotics and iSPACE: The STEM Learning Place.<\/p>\n<p>She comes about her affinity for science and teaching naturally, inspired by her father, a high school science teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents encouraged us to think big and believe in ourselves,\u201d Morgan said. \u201cThe important piece is doing the work.
