{"id":158569,"date":"2025-04-18T09:44:30","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T13:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=158569"},"modified":"2025-04-21T09:09:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T13:09:34","slug":"wright-state-alum-morgan-obrien-honored-for-global-diplomacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/18\/wright-state-alum-morgan-obrien-honored-for-global-diplomacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State alum Morgan O\u2019Brien honored for global diplomacy\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This May, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Dayton is a signature event for the region, and one that likely will rekindle memories for Wright State University alum Morgan O\u2019Brien about the diplomat he once served.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u2019Brien, currently assigned to the United States Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, was an assistant to Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and the architect of the Dayton Peace Agreement. The NATO assembly, in Dayton from May 22 to 26, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the peace accords that ended the Bosnian War in 1995.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u2019Brien\u2019s diplomatic career has continued to blossom, so much so that he received the 2025 College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Wright State University Alumni Association.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cReceiving this award means a lot, but it\u2019s incredible because the school has already given me so much. This is just icing on the cake,\u201d said O\u2019Brien, who earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/social-sciences-and-international-studies\/master-of-arts-in-international-and-comparative-politics\">master\u2019s degree in international and comparative politics<\/a> from Wright State in 2007. \u201cI am just so grateful for the life experiences and the life lessons learned on campus.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u2019Brien, who has been a diplomat for 15 years, previously served in Washington, D.C., at the Bureau of Consular Affairs, where he created the role of industry liaison to help businesses return to pre-pandemic operations with a focus on visas and passports.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_158573\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/18\/wright-state-alum-morgan-obrien-honored-for-global-diplomacy\/71721-kathy-kuntz-alumni-achievement-awards-2-7-25-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-158573\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158573\" class=\"size-large wp-image-158573\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2025\/04\/Morgan-OBrien-71721_041-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-158573\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State alum Morgan O\u2019Brien\u2019s diplomatic career has taken him from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to the United Nations and the State Department to NATO.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was also the State Department\u2019s sports diplomacy officer, a Council on Foreign Relations fellow with the National Basketball Association and served in the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, where he was on Holbrooke\u2019s staff.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before all that, O\u2019Brien was in the Air Force, as a public affairs officer in Baghdad, Albuquerque, post-Katrina New Orleans and Dayton, where he was a second lieutenant and an assistant wrestling coach at Chaminade-Julienne High School.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Air Force really drummed into the officer corps the importance of getting a secondary education,\u201d said O\u2019Brien, who also graduated from the University of North Carolina and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. \u201cWright State really embraces the military community. They walk the walk in that space.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He added, \u201cThanks to the wonderful staff there that understands and really serves that military community. I couldn\u2019t be more thankful.
