{"id":159553,"date":"2025-05-29T13:31:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T17:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=159553"},"modified":"2025-05-29T13:31:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T17:31:49","slug":"wright-state-marketing-professors-new-book-takes-the-horror-out-of-managing-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/05\/29\/wright-state-marketing-professors-new-book-takes-the-horror-out-of-managing-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State marketing professor\u2019s new book takes the horror out of managing debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_159561\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/05\/29\/wright-state-marketing-professors-new-book-takes-the-horror-out-of-managing-debt\/john-dinsmore-74299_017\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-159561\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159561\" class=\"wp-image-159561 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2025\/05\/john-Dinsmore-74299_017-508x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-159561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Dinsmore, professor of marketing at Wright State, explores how common sales tactics lead people to make costly mistakes with credit cards, loans and mortgages in his new book, \u201cThe Marketing of Debt: How They Get You.\u201d (Photo by Erin Pence)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State marketing professor John Dinsmore, Ph.D., wants to help consumers recognize when financial decisions are being influenced by clever marketing.<\/p>\n<p>In his new book, \u201cThe Marketing of Debt: How They Get You,\u201d Dinsmore explores how common sales tactics lead people to make costly mistakes with credit cards, loans and mortgages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarketing tactics, deliberately or not, exploit these biases or blind spots when it comes to evaluating debt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said research has shown, for example, that the marketing of high-priced goods by offering no payments for six months can lead to people overestimating their ability to pay off that debt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople find themselves in more debt than they had anticipated because they\u2019re overly optimistic,\u201d Dinsmore said. \u201cOptimism can be great, but in financial decision-making, it can be hurtful. Not that not having to make a payment for six months is bad, but it causes people to make misjudgments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The subtitle \u201cHow They Get You\u201d calls attention to how financial products are marketed, leading to misjudgments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2025\/05\/29\/wright-state-marketing-professors-new-book-takes-the-horror-out-of-managing-debt\/debt-cover\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-159568\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-159568\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2025\/05\/debt-cover-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Dinsmore said consumers \u201cassume they\u2019ll have more time, money and energy than they have today,\u201d but that\u2019s rarely the case.<\/p>\n<p>He examines different topics, and at the end of each chapter, suggests ways to avoid those misjudgments.
