{"id":163543,"date":"2026-01-29T08:53:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T13:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=163543"},"modified":"2026-01-29T08:53:51","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T13:53:51","slug":"wright-state-music-professor-honored-with-ohios-top-music-education-service-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/29\/wright-state-music-professor-honored-with-ohios-top-music-education-service-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State music professor honored with Ohio\u2019s top music education service award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">What started as a typical day of teaching in Schuster Hall turned into an unforgettable moment for Wright State University\u2019s Shelley Jagow, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jagow, professor of music and director of bands, was teaching a class in Schuster Hall on Dec. 5 when representatives from the Ohio Music Education Association stepped onto the stage to share unexpected news: Jagow had been selected to receive the association\u2019s Distinguished Service Award at its Professional Development Conference in Columbus in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was totally surprised,\u201d Jagow said. \u201cI saw important people coming in and I thought, \u2018Am I in trouble?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The announcement, made by Brian Stevens, the president of the Ohio Music Education Association, was met with cheers from Wright State faculty and staff who had been tipped off about the surprise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s such a prestigious award and I\u2019m very humbled by it,\u201d Jagow said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Distinguished Service Award is the association\u2019s highest annual honor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is for someone who has over many years provided incredible service in teaching and leadership throughout the state in music education,\u201d Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mark Hensler, director of professional development at the Ohio Music Education Association, nominated Jagow for her impact on students and educators around the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stevens said Jagow has long been seen as a leader and master teacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cShe has contributed so much to our profession,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Jagow, the award reflects her lifelong passion for music.
