{"id":163641,"date":"2026-02-04T09:03:39","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=163641"},"modified":"2026-02-04T09:03:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:03:39","slug":"dayton-daily-news-wright-state-to-teach-area-teachers-how-to-prepare-for-civics-classes-host-student-civics-summer-camps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2026\/02\/04\/dayton-daily-news-wright-state-to-teach-area-teachers-how-to-prepare-for-civics-classes-host-student-civics-summer-camps\/","title":{"rendered":"Dayton Daily News: Wright State to teach area teachers how to prepare for civics classes; host student civics summer camps"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_163647\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2026\/02\/04\/dayton-daily-news-wright-state-to-teach-area-teachers-how-to-prepare-for-civics-classes-host-student-civics-summer-camps\/251208_1485_civic-center__web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-163647\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163647\" class=\"size-large wp-image-163647\" src=\"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2026\/02\/251208_1485_Civic-Center__web-508x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-163647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Wright State\u2019s Center for Civics, Culture and Workforce Development staff members Adam Reiman, deputy director; Jason Anderson, executive director; Diane Vitas; and Mike Jacobs, deputy director.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State University will use a $3 million U.S. Department of Education grant for civics education across central and southwest Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>The project \u2014 Civic Foundations: Equipping K\u201312 for America\u2019s Next 250 Years \u2014 will help educators and students to better understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens and to apply those lessons in their classrooms, communities and daily life, according to Wright State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of the grant is to strengthen civic literacy and civic engagement across Southwest Ohio by building K\u201312 educators\u2019 capacity to teach civics and American history, while also providing direct, engaging learning opportunities for students,\u201d said Jason Anderson, Wright State executive director of the Center for Civics, Culture and Workforce Development.<\/p>\n<p>He said the work is intentionally designed as a multi-year \u201ccivic infrastructure\u201d effort.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year program includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>48 in-person civics seminars for up to 8,640 K\u201312 educators and other school staff, such as principals<\/li>\n<li>Credentialing of 1,080 teacher-leaders in civics education<\/li>\n<li>Immersive summer camps for 1,800 students focused on civic knowledge, leadership and civil discourse<\/li>\n<li>An interactive Civic-Quest online platform projected to serve 920 educators and 500 students annually<\/li>\n<li>Mentorships, leadership development and certification of 30 Train-the-Trainer fellows<\/li>\n<li>12 full-tuition scholarships for exceptional student civic ambassadors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anderson said the initiative is framed around the U.S.\u2019s 250th anniversary in 2026.
