{"id":165996,"date":"2026-05-21T09:10:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T13:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=165996"},"modified":"2026-05-21T09:10:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T13:10:50","slug":"wright-state-pedals-toward-bicycle-friendly-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/21\/wright-state-pedals-toward-bicycle-friendly-recognition\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State pedals toward bicycle friendly recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Situated along the Wright Brothers-Huffman Prairie Bikeway, Wright State University is working to become a designated Bicycle Friendly University through the League of American Bicyclists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wright State is located near one of the nation\u2019s largest networks of paved bike trails with access to more than 350 miles of paved and multi-use recreation trails connecting to Huffman Reserve MetroPark and the Wright Brothers Memorial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have so many students who do not have reliable transportation or who just want to go outside and enjoy the beautiful trails the Dayton area has to offer,\u201d said Erin Compaleo, assistant director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/student-affairs\/campus-recreation\/outdoor-resource-center\">outdoor recreation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past year, Wright State\u2019s Campus Recreation has expanded its support for cycling by offering free bicycle rentals, installing a new bicycle storage area and adding an outdoor bicycle workstation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Compaleo said Wright State\u2019s application highlights the university\u2019s bike-friendly initiatives, including on- and off-road trail networks, campus facilities, classes and safety training, as well as plans to staff and fund a comprehensive bicycle program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wright State\u2019s focus on bicycle accessibility and education extends to all members of the campus community, including the youngest students at the Wright State University Child Development Center, or Mini University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the center\u2019s annual Safety Week, the Wright State Police Department partnered with Mini U to teach children about bicycle safety. Sgt. Nicholas Quillen visited several classrooms to explain the importance of wearing helmets and riding in safe locations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great way to partner with Mini U and to interact with the kids at an early age,\u201d said Wright State Police Capt.
