Hopkins, Wright State mascot Rowdy and NCAA President Marl Emmert.\" width=\"260\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NCAA President Mark Emmert praised Wright State student-athletes for maintaining a 3.0 GPA for 30 consecutive academic terms as well as their consistent involvement in community outreach.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association paid a visit to Wright State, applauding the academic performance of Wright State\u2019s student-athletes and saying their commitment to community service should serve as a national model.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Emmert, whose association regulates collegiate athletics programs around the country, said Wright State was among the first universities to recognize the importance of community service and engagement by its students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that that\u2019s an important part of the Wright State experience makes it an exemplar for the rest of athletics,\u201d Emmert said. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly the kind of thing that we\u2019d all like to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emmert was the keynote speaker at Wright State\u2019s Tip-Off Basketball Luncheon on Oct. 22 in the Berry Room of the Wright State Nutter Center.<\/p>\n<p>His appearance drew a host of newspaper and television reporters. Prior to his luncheon address, he met with reporters to detail how the operation of the 1,100-member NCAA is being transformed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16895\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/10\/22\/ncaa-president-lauds-wright-states-academics-community-service\/9873-375\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16895\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16895\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16895\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/10\/9873-375-260x147.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of NCAA President Mark Emmert at the Wright State basketball Tip-off Luncheon.\" width=\"260\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The keynote speaker at Wright State&#8217;s Tip-Off Luncheon, Emmert shared his take on academic standards, pay-for-play and conference realignment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Emmert said the NCAA has raised the academic standards for incoming students and is requiring Division I teams to meet an academic progress mark that coincides with a 50 percent graduation rate in order to participate in post-season tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Emmert praised Wright State student-athletes for having 3.0 grade point averages for 30 consecutive terms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat kind of performance pretty much defines what we\u2019re looking for,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Emmert said the NCAA Division I board will vote next week on changing the way violations of NCAA bylaws are classified, setting penalties and speeding the adjudication of cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have high expectations of our coaches, student-athletes and administrators,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want fewer infractions, not more of them. We want people to play by the rules and maintain a fair playing field for everybody involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State President David R. Hopkins serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors\u2014the most powerful governing body in the 350-member D-I\u2014and the seven-member presidential advisory group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2019s got to sit there and not just represent Wright State, not just the Horizon League, but all of the NCAA and all of Division I and make judgments just like a member of the U.S. Senate would trying to represent their constituency and also the greater good,\u201d Emmert said.<\/p>\n<p>Hopkins introduced Emmert as a man who has shown dynamic leadership and integrity during some difficult times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been so impressed,\u201d Hopkins said. \u201cHis heart, his values are exactly what we care about at Wright State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In answers to questions, Emmert said he opposes the idea of paying college athletes to play. And he said he dislikes the so-called \u201cone-and-done\u201d phenomenon created by the National Basketball Association of having players go to college for one year before coming to the NBA, saying it sends a message of that it\u2019s not important to be a serious student.<\/p>\n<p>The luncheon swelled the Berry Room with scores of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and members from the community.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s head basketball coach Billy Donlon said he is excited about this year\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re faster than we were last year,\u201d Donlon said. \u201cWhat we lack in size and just physicalness and strength is still a problem for us. We\u2019ll make up for it with our speed and some of our toughness. Our guys are going to compete.
