Ohio Medical Education Day serves as an entry point into Ohio\u2019s medical education pipeline, connecting undergraduate students with medical schools and helping them prepare for medical school and a career in medicine.<\/p><\/div>\n

Ohio\u2019s medical community will converge at Wright State University on Oct. 3 when the Boonshoft School of Medicine hosts Ohio Medical Education Day<\/a>, bringing aspiring physicians, medical students, advisors and medical school representatives to campus.<\/p>\n

The annual event serves as an entry point into Ohio\u2019s medical education pipeline, connecting nearly 200 undergraduate students with medical schools and educators and helping them prepare for medical school and a career in medicine.<\/p>\n

For the Boonshoft School of Medicine<\/a>, hosting the daylong event also provides an opportunity to introduce students to Wright State\u2019s medical education programs<\/a> and its partnerships with Premier Health and Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital, supporting healthcare in Southwest Ohio.<\/p>\n

The keynote speaker will be Denise Akuamoah, a second-year medical student at the Boonshoft School of Medicine and president of the class of 2029. A South Side Chicago native and Ghanaian American, Akuamoah is a former educator and hospital chaplain with experience in community health. She earned a Master of Science in Biology from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Master of Divinity from Duke University.<\/p>\n

Drawing on her unconventional path to medicine, Akuamoah will encourage students to protect their personhood, pivot with purpose and pass it forward as they pursue a medical career. Her work reflects a commitment to health equity, culturally humble care and encouraging future physicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cOhio Medical Education Day is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to connect with medical schools across the state and gain practical guidance as they prepare for their next steps,\u201d said Kaelin Locker, director of admissions at the Boonshoft School of Medicine. \u201cWe hope students leave feeling better prepared to apply to medical school and with a deeper understanding of what makes the Boonshoft School of Medicine a place where they can learn, grow and prepare to serve Ohio communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event will feature sessions on the medical application process, crafting a personal statement, the MCAT and financially preparing for medical school. Students can also meet with medical school representatives during a Meet the Deans Fair and tour the Boonshoft School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

The day offers pre-medical students both practical preparation and inspiration for their journey to becoming a physician, said Mollie Hartup, Ph.D., director of the Sokolov Honors College at Youngstown State University and president of the Ohio Health Professions Advisors.<\/p>\n

\u201cOhio Medical Education Day is a wonderful example of what is possible when people and institutions come together around a shared commitment to students,\u201d Hartup said. \u201cWe want students to leave not only better prepared for the path to medical school but also inspired to think about the physician they hope to become and the person they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ohio Medical Education Day brings together the Ohio health professions advising community and the state\u2019s medical schools each year, rotating among host institutions. Wright State last hosted the event in 2014.<\/p>\n
