They then met to discuss ways to fight discrimination and poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the group, which also included faculty and staff, on Jan. 22 gathered at five outlying parts of campus and then converged at <em>Turning Points,<\/em> the large red sculpture in the center of campus.<\/p>\n<p>The marchers, some bearing signs bearing the words \u201cEquality\u201d and \u201cWorld Peace,\u201d then proceeded to the Student Union to hear a number of speakers and take part in a workshop on civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p>King\u2014a clergyman, activist and prominent leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement\u2014received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial discrimination. He was assassinated in 1968. In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18468\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/01\/22\/wright-state-students-pay-tribute-to-martin-luther-king-jr-with-march-rally\/barrett-mlk-event\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18468\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18468\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18468\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/01\/Barrett-MLK-Event-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Kimberly Barrett, Ph.D., vice president for multicultural affairs and community engagement\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kimberly Barrett, vice president for multicultural affairs and community engagement, speaks at the Martin Luther King Jr. event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Excerpts from King speeches were read to the students, who assembled in the Apollo Room.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Barrett, Ph.D., vice president for multicultural affairs and community engagement, told the students that King began working on the issue of poverty shortly before his death. And she urged the students to advocate for changes in the system that would reduce poverty.<\/p>\n<p>J. Michael Bernstein, assistant dean of the Raj Soin College of Business, said that as a young student at Ohio Northern University, he heard King\u2019s final college speech.<\/p>\n<p>He called on students to do their part to end discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what you can,\u201d Bernstein said. \u201cLet\u2019s all work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Catherine \u201cKaty\u201d Crosby, executive director of the city of Dayton\u2019s Human Relations Council, said King\u2019s dream was about equality for everyone.
