{"id":20565,"date":"2013-04-09T13:14:51","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T17:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=20565"},"modified":"2022-09-28T10:13:05","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:13:05","slug":"model-un-team-again-named-one-of-best-at-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/04\/09\/model-un-team-again-named-one-of-best-at-national-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Model UN team again named one of the best at national conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_20582\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/04\/09\/model-un-team-again-named-one-of-best-at-national-conference\/model_un_team\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20582\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20582\" class=\"wp-image-20582 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/04\/model_un_team-508x399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State&#8217;s Model UN team was named Outstanding Delegation for 34th consecutive year at the National Model United Nations Conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State University\u2019s Model UN team continued its remarkable streak at the National Model United Nations Conference, receiving the highest recognition possible at the competition for the 34th year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Competing against 149 universities around the world, Wright State was one of 20 colleges to receive Outstanding Delegation recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Wright State delegates also received seven committee awards for Outstanding Position Papers: General Assembly First Committee, General Assembly Fourth Committee, Commission on the Status of Women, UN Habitat, UN Conference on Trade and Development, Human Rights Council and Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>Students on the following committees were named Outstanding Delegates in Committee by their peers: Economic and Social Council, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, UNICEF, Habitat and Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>Held in March in New York City, the competition included 2,500 students from 46 different countries.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s team represented Italy, with one student serving on a Security Council team representing India. During the conference, students represent their designated country and produce resolutions by working with students from other teams.<\/p>\n<p>The Wright State team includes students from four different colleges (College of Liberal Arts, College of Education and Human Services, College of Engineering and Computer Science and Raj Soin College of Business). The team\u2019s faculty advisors are Donna Schlagheck, Ph.D., political science chair, and Vaughn Shannon, Ph.D., associate professor of political science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program truly helps us educate globally aware, engaged students who know how to collaborate to solve problems,\u201d Schlagheck said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20581\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/04\/09\/model-un-team-again-named-one-of-best-at-national-conference\/model_un_andrea_jacoby_kuyer_fazekas\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20581\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20581\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20581\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/04\/model_un_andrea_jacoby_kuyer_fazekas-260x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Head delegates Andrea Jacoby and Kuyer Fazekas and other members of the Model UN team visited the Italian Mission to the United Nations.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Andrea Jacoby and Kuyer Fazekas, the 2013 team\u2019s head delegates, led the preparation on campus as well as Wright State\u2019s team at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Because Italy plays a significant role in the European Union, Jacoby said, Wright State delegates focused on connecting Italian policies with EU policies in the papers the team submitted for the conference. The team also performed in-class UN simulations and participated in several local conferences with area universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Model United Nations Conference does such a good job of providing international students opportunities and blending an educational setting with real-life situations,\u201d Jacoby said. \u201cAll the universities do such a good job of training their delegates that they truly challenge our delegates and everyone is forced to truly think outside the box to provide the best answers to their topics and write stellar resolutions or reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Preparation for the conference involved more than writing papers and learning a country\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the semester, we teach our delegates how to implement Italian policy, how to dress, how to act in committee, and what to expect from other countries they will be working with in committee,\u201d Jacoby said.<\/p>\n<p>While in New York for the competition, the team also met with the legal advisor to the Italian Mission. \u201cHe gave us such great insight to specific areas within Italian policy and how it relates to the EU and the UN,\u201d Jacoby said.<\/p>\n<p>Jacoby said Model UN helps student improve their critical thinking and problem- solving skills. \u201cThe MUN team has prepared me for so much,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has made me a better writer, a better public speaker, and established strong leadership skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the influence Model UN has had on Jacoby\u2019s life goes far beyond campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModel United Nations changed my life,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is such a great educational experience, but also a great real-life experience. Model UN opens doors that I could not have even imagined being provided during my college career.
