{"id":21779,"date":"2013-05-28T06:00:50","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T10:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=21779"},"modified":"2022-09-28T11:19:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T15:19:42","slug":"wind-symphony-performs-at-carnegie-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/05\/28\/wind-symphony-performs-at-carnegie-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Wind Symphony performs at Carnegie Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_21760\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/05\/28\/wind-symphony-performs-at-carnegie-hall\/wind-symphony-1600x946\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21760\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21760\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21760\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/05\/wind-symphony-1600x946-508x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wind Symphony in Schuster Hall\" width=\"460\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wind Symphony was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in May.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Wright State University Wind Symphony reached a major milestone when it performed at one of the world\u2019s most prestigious concert venues.<\/p>\n<p>The Wind Symphony was invited to perform during the \u201cDebut Series\u201d at Carnegie Hall on May 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome say to play at Carnegie Hall is the musical equivalent of being at the Super Bowl,\u201d said David Booth, D.M.A., Wind Symphony conductor, director of bands and professor of music.<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble performed three pieces at Carnegie: \u201cAspen Jubilee,\u201d by composer Ron Nelson; \u201cElsa\u2019s Procession to the Cathedral,\u201d a transcription of a segment from Richard Wagner\u2019s opera <em>Lohengrin; <\/em>and \u201cWords of Love\u201d by composer James Mobberley.<\/p>\n<p>Soprano Diana Cataldi, D.M.A., adjunct instructor of music, was the featured soloist in two of the pieces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe all of us felt our hearts pounding with the awe-inspiring thrill of stepping out onto that famous stage for our performance,\u201d Cataldi said. \u201cIt was a dream come true, an opportunity of a lifetime, and a memory I know each of us will cherish as a highlight in our musical careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Booth described the Wind Symphony\u2019s performance as \u201cabsolutely magnificent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more proud,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21758\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/05\/28\/wind-symphony-performs-at-carnegie-hall\/wind-symph-rehearsal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21758\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21758\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21758\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/05\/wind-symph-rehearsal-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"Wind Symphony rehearsal\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wind Symphony rehearsing during the Spring Semester in Schuster Hall in the Creative Arts Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Wind Symphony was invited to play at Carnegie Hall after a talent scout with Manhattan Concert Productions, which books acts for the venue, saw the ensemble perform two years ago at the Ohio Music Education Association state conference in Columbus.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-six students participated in the concert. The performance has boosted the students\u2019 confidence, Booth said, and will increase the prestige of both the wind ensemble and Wright State\u2019s music program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the Wind Symphony will ever be the same after this trip. I think it\u2019s fundamentally changed now,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a legacy that future students now have to live up to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josclynn Garrison, a senior and principal bassoonist of the Wind Symphony, said that playing at Carnegie Hall was a great honor and an exhilarating opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means the world to the Department of Music as well as the university,\u201d said Garrison, who is president of the Wind Symphony Leadership Council. \u201cOur reputation as school is growing and this growth is being noticed in a great way. It is nothing but up from here. I can&#8217;t wait to see what the future holds for this program!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the Wind Symphony\u2019s reputation has grown throughout the Midwest. The ensemble has toured Japan twice and performed in Korea and several times at the Ohio Music Education Association\u2019s statewide conference.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to playing at Carnegie Hall, the Wind Symphony performed during a warm-up concert on May 10 in the Philadelphia suburb of Newtown, Pa.<\/p>\n<p>Wind ensemble members also watched the National Symphony Orchestra perform in Carnegie Hall the night before their own performance. \u201cThey were surely thinking what I was thinking, \u2018We have to step up there and do that tomorrow,\u2019\u201d Booth said.<\/p>\n<p>The trip was supported by Val P.
