{"id":22060,"date":"2013-06-11T12:12:01","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T16:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=22060"},"modified":"2013-06-11T12:12:02","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T16:12:02","slug":"wright-state-students-present-wage-gap-project-at-national-conference-for-college-women-student-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/06\/11\/wright-state-students-present-wage-gap-project-at-national-conference-for-college-women-student-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State students present wage gap project at National Conference for College Women Student Leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_21951\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/06\/11\/wright-state-students-present-wage-gap-project-at-national-conference-for-college-women-student-leaders\/womens-center-students\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21951\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21951\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21951\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/06\/Womens-Center-students-260x203.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(L-R) Malaya Davis, Margaret Murray and Elly Shellhaas pose for a picture at the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two Wright State University students whose project aimed at closing the wage gap for women presented their work at the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL).<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Murray, a graduate assistant in the Women\u2019s Center, and Elly Shellhaas, a volunteer intern in the center, presented their Campus Action Project (CAP) <em>Learn, Negotiate, Succeed: Educating to End the Wage Gap<\/em>, a grant-funded educational campaign which they implemented on campus during the spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>The Women\u2019s Center, in partnership with the Office of Career Services, was awarded the (CAP) grant in 2012 from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).<\/p>\n<p>Women who are employed full time in Ohio are paid 77 cents for every dollar paid to men, amounting to an average yearly gap in wages of $10,430, according to a recent study conducted by the National Partnership for Women &amp; Families, using U.S. Census Bureau data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresenting our project next to the other great projects really gave us a perspective we hadn\u2019t had before,\u201d said Murray. \u201cThe experience affirmed to us that we did a good job listening to our audience and tailoring our project to our specific campus, whereas other projects from other schools seemed to be more generalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murray and Shellhaas organized several events for the project, including multiple speaking events with prominent female professionals from the Dayton region, an employer panel that included several human resources representatives from area businesses, and a $tart $mart workshop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the one we got the most questions about at the conference,\u201d said Murray. \u201cPeople asked us how well attended it was considering the size and demographics of our college.
