<\/a>Anna Zamora earned a degree in sports science, exercise physiology at Wright State and is poised to join Yale University as a strength and conditioning coach.<\/p><\/div>\n
Life for Zamora has recently been a blur.<\/p>\n
She just finished her internship as a strength and conditioning coach at Duke University, collected her degree at Wright State University and was commissioned in the Army as a 2nd lieutenant. She is now preparing to move to New Haven, Conn., where she will serve in the Connecticut National Guard, work as a strength and conditioning coach at Yale University and pursue her graduate degree in sports administration at the University of Connecticut.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got a full plate, but I\u2019m looking forward to it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Zamora grew up in the shadow of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where her father was an Air Force tech sergeant. She graduated from Stebbins High School, where she played soccer and was a cheerleader.<\/p>\n
Zamora enrolled at The Ohio State University, but transferred to Wright State because she preferred a smaller campus closer to home. Then she took a break from school for a few years and worked at a bank.<\/p>\n
Some friends got her interested in strength and conditioning for college athletics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided I wanted to pursue a career I had fallen in love with, and I knew I needed the right degree to do that,\u201d she said. \u201cI decided that sports science, exercise physiology was the direction I wanted to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
So Zamora returned to Wright State in 2010 and joined the military as a way to help her pay for her education.<\/p>\n
\u201cI decided the Army National Guard would be the best bet for me to finish my degree and still allow me to come out with not as much debt and also provide me an income while I was in school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She was assigned to the 371st Sustainment Brigade in Springfield, a unit with a storied history.<\/p>\n
The brigade\u2019s transportation, MP and water purification units were mobilized for Operation Desert Shield\/Desert Storm. And the brigade was in charge of staging and onward-movement operations for much of Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1.<\/p>\n
Zamora decided to become an officer and opted for Army ROTC. She took part in numerous field-training exercises, community events and went to leadership training at Joint Base Lewis\/McChord in Seattle.<\/p>\n
\u201cROTC has been an awesome experience and a great networking opportunity and provided me a lot of experience to help me get through school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
In pursuing her sports science degree, Zamora was taking classes in anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry and biomechanics.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a long, hard road, but it\u2019s been absolutely amazing, every step,\u201d she said. \u201cThe classes were pretty hard, but the program is full of great teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said Wright State allowed her to do distance learning while she interned at Duke, which was critical to her getting her degree in a timely manner.<\/p>\n
Her career will begin at Yale, where she will be a strength and conditioning coach for the softball and volleyball teams, the men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country teams, the men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis teams, gymnastics and sailing.<\/p>\n
Zamora\u2019s advice to students interested in sports science is to tap into that passion and keep their eyes on the prize.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe opportunities are out there,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a matter of staying connected, knowing what your options are and putting yourself out there.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
