\u201cUnwoven Light,\u201d an exhibit by Soo Sunny Park, will be on display at the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries at Wright State Sept. 15\u2013Oct. 13.<\/p><\/div>\n

A world of light, shadow and brilliant color will soon be shimmering in the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries at Wright State University with the opening of \u201cUnwoven Light,\u201d an exhibit by Soo Sunny Park.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will open on Sept. 15 and be on view through Oct. 13. The artist will give a public lecture on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. with a closing reception to follow until 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnwoven Light\u201d continues Park’s ongoing experimentation with large forms and the ephemeral qualities of light within a specific space. Thirty-seven individually sculpted units of chainlink fencing will be arranged from ceiling to floor. Plexiglas shapes coated with iridescent dichroic film are contained within the chain links and, with the help of bright LED lighting, cast shimmering shadows of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike a net, the sculpture is a filter that is meant to capture the light that is already there and force it to reveal itself,\u201d Park said. \u201cNow we can see it, the light, in purple shadows and yellow-green reflections that both mirror the shape of the fence and restructure the space they inhabit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnwoven Light\u201d was commissioned by and first exhibited at Rice Gallery, Rice University in Houston, Texas, and is now taking a new form specific to the Stein Galleries. The exhibition at Rice Gallery has been highly reviewed and acclaimed.<\/p>\n

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Park received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from Columbus College of Art & Design, Columbus, Ohio, and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Park is the recipient of many recent awards and residencies and currently lives and works in Hanover, N.H., where she is associate professor of studio art at Dartmouth College.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is made possible with support from the Ohio Arts Council, individual supporters of the Stein Galleries and Wright State University\u2019s College of Liberal Arts. Additional exhibition and LED light support was provided by Dayton Power and Light Co.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gallery hours are Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Designated visitor parking on campus is free, and parking at the Creative Arts Center is unrestricted after 4:30 p.m. Fridays and weekends. A dedicated parking space for galleries patrons is available during school hours.<\/p>\n
