In fact, Smith is reminded of it every day he comes to work.<\/p>\n<p>The retired brigadier general is the new director of Calamityville, the National Center for Medical Readiness administered by Wright State University. Smith was among those who participated in the city of Fairborn\u2019s annual 9\/11 Memorial Ceremony Sept. 11 near the 9\/11 monument in front of the Calamityville headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere couldn\u2019t be a better location for this memorial, one more directly related to our mission, than right here,\u201d said Smith, who began work for Wright State on Aug. 27. \u201cWe are here to make sure first responders are ready for their worst day; this monument and this ceremony help remind us how important that training can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23859\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/09\/11\/calamityville-hosts-memorial-ceremony-at-911-monument\/911memorialgroup\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23859\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23859\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23859 \" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/09\/911MemorialGroup-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23859\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Those attending the Sept. 11 city of Fairborn 9\/11 Memorial Ceremony at Calamityville included (left to right) retired Major General Matthew Kambic, state Senator Chris Widener, Calamityville Director Rufus Smith, CBD Advisors CEO Barbara Schenck, and Wright State Vice President for Research Robert Fyffe, Ph.D.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 12.5-foot steel beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center buildings is the memorial\u2019s centerpiece. Phase II of the project was recently completed. It includes a pentagon-shaped base for the beam and adjoining concrete marker as well as walkways and paving stones connecting that area to a pair of circular \u201creflecting\u201d areas.<\/p>\n<p>Monument committee co-chairs Marilyn McCauley and Dave Reichert were among those who spoke at the morning ceremony while the flag on the facility\u2019s grounds flew at half-staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 4,255 Greene County residents who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan between May 2001 and May 2012, more than any county in Ohio,\u201d McCauley said. \u201cThis monument helps remind us of the impact that terrorist attack had, and continues to have, on America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith was among the National Guard officers dispatched to various airports when the nation\u2019s military were placed on high alert following the 2001 attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has led civilian-military response to disasters like Hurricane Katrina,\u201d said Wright State Vice President for Research Robert Fyffe, Ph.D., who introduced Smith at the ceremony. \u201cWe are so pleased to have him with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also included a welcome from Fairborn Mayor Thomas Nagel, a proclamation from Ohio Governor John Kasich, the American Legion Post 526 Salute to Fallen Comrades and \u201cTaps,\u201d and concluded with \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d being played on the bagpipes by Montgomery County Sheriff\u2019s Office retired sergeant Del Braund.<\/p>\n<p>Smith said negotiations for the transfer of the Calamityville land from the city to the university have concluded and the university\u2019s Board of Trustees is considering the tentative agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rufus Smith remembers well the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
