Top Secret clearance.<\/p>\n<p>This was recently a way of life for Aaron Jenkins, a junior ROTC student at Wright State who had been deployed to Cuba by the Coast Guard.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins was stationed in the courthouse at Guantanamo Bay, where he got an up-close view of detainees being processed and awaiting trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty intense,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Jenkins is majoring in crime and justice studies at Wright State. He became interested in the field because it paralleled his job in the Coast Guard, where he was a maritime enforcement specialist.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25454\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/11\/08\/baywatch-cuba-part-of-journey-for-rotc-student\/jenkins1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25454\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25454\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25454\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/11\/Jenkins1-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jenkins says he enjoys ROTC because it teaches responsibility, time management and communication skills.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jenkins grew up in Springfield, Ohio. In the summers, he would work on his relatives\u2019 farms, baling hay, birthing cattle, showing animals at county fairs. In high school, he played football, ran track, did a little power lifting.<\/p>\n<p>After high school, Jenkins attended The Ohio State University, where he played rugby. He left school and enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves, later enrolled at Wright State, then transferred to Ohio State, then transferred back to Wright State and joined the Army ROTC.<\/p>\n<p>The Reserve Officers\u2019 Training Corps (ROTC) is a college-based program to train students to become commissioned officers of the armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins says he enjoys ROTC, adding that it teaches responsibility, time management and communication skills. He says it is a lot of work, but that he would recommend it because it helps pay for school and can result in a commission and a career in the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd anybody who is on the fence about whether the Army or any of the branches of service are right for them, ROTC is a great way to get a feel for what military life is like for up to two years without actually having to sign contracts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins plans to make the Army his career, but after retirement would be interested in working as a U.S. marshal or with the Drug Enforcement Administration or U.S. Border Patrol.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins said his favorite ROTC experience so far has been parachuting out of planes during airborne school at Fort Benning, Ga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJumping out of planes was something I always wanted to do,\u201d he said. \u201cBut my plan is to fly helicopters, not jump out of planes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/army-rotc\">http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/army-rotc<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guantanamo Bay.
