{"id":25949,"date":"2013-11-27T12:37:38","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T16:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=25949"},"modified":"2022-09-27T11:18:04","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T15:18:04","slug":"december-green-honored-with-2013-international-education-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/11\/27\/december-green-honored-with-2013-international-education-award\/","title":{"rendered":"December Green honored with 2013 International Education Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December Green, director of international studies at Wright State and known for her deep commitment to educating students on issues and cultures of foreign countries, was named recipient of the university\u2019s 2013 International Education Award.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25950\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2013\/11\/27\/december-green-honored-with-2013-international-education-award\/12697-fran-keeley-international-education-week-reception-11-20-13\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25950\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25950\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25950\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2013\/11\/Green-260x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">December Green, with award, is flanked by Donna Schlagheck (left), chair of the Political Science Department, and Laura Luehrmann, associate professor of political science.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Green, Ph.D., is a distinguished scholar with an extensive record on politics in the developing world, gender violence, ideologies and contemporary Africa. She is sought out for her commentary and expertise on various subjects, especially human rights and contemporary African politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Green has been instrumental in the development of international curriculum on our campus,\u201d said Stephen Foster, associate vice president for international affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Green developed several new concentrations in the international studies major, including Asian Studies, Global Gender Studies, and Research and Intelligence Analysis. Programs she developed and led include \u201cHuman Rights in Europe,\u201d \u201cComparative Human Rights: Morocco and Spain,\u201d \u201cComparative Human Rights: Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand,\u201d and \u201cComparative Human Rights: Argentina and Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next summer Green will be taking students to London, Paris, Brussels and The Hague as part of teaching \u201cHuman Rights in Europe.\u201d She has previously taken students on numerous overseas trips and taught as a visiting instructor at the University of the Basque Country in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecember reaches her students on a level that few other professors do,\u201d said Laura Luehrmann, Ph.D., associate professor of political science. \u201cHer passion ignites their hunger to respond to injustices before them and to dig more deeply to really understand countries, cultures and the peoples who navigate the personal and the political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green obtained her bachelor\u2019s degree in history and master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in government and international studies from the University of South Carolina.
