{"id":30377,"date":"2014-05-09T10:11:05","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T14:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=30377"},"modified":"2022-09-29T12:42:08","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T16:42:08","slug":"wright-state-grads-documentary-to-play-at-cannes-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/05\/09\/wright-state-grads-documentary-to-play-at-cannes-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State grads\u2019 documentary to play at Cannes Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_30396\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/05\/09\/wright-state-grads-documentary-to-play-at-cannes-film-festival\/sultan1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30396\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30396\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30396\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/05\/Sultan1-508x329.jpg\" alt=\"Josh Deane, Tarik Sultan and Yasser Souisri\" width=\"460\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State grads Josh Deane (left) and Yasser Souisri (right) with Tarik Sultan, the star of The Sultan, which will play at the Cannes Short Film Corner.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A short film by two recent Wright State film graduates examining the challenges facing a male belly dancer will be included in the Cannes International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Deane and Yasser Souisri, both of whom graduated from Wright State\u2019s Motion Pictures program May 3, will travel to France when their documentary <em>The Sultan<\/em> plays at the Short Film Corner at Cannes May 14\u201325.<\/p>\n<p>Though not part of the film festival\u2019s competition, the Short Film Corner is an opportunity for filmmakers to show their films and enter them into the film corner database, promote projects and meet other producers and film buyers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30395\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/05\/09\/wright-state-grads-documentary-to-play-at-cannes-film-festival\/sultan\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30395\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30395\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30395\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/05\/Sultan-260x146.jpg\" alt=\"Tarik Sultan\" width=\"260\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sultan is intimate portrait of Tarik Sultan, a male belly dancer struggling with self-image and making a living as an artist in our culture.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of unreal. I\u2019m just stepping out the door immediately from school &#8230; and this is the first thing we\u2019re doing\u2014going to Cannes,\u201d Deane said.<\/p>\n<p>Souisri, who was born in Algeria, said Cannes is a perfect place to reach an international audience. \u201cIt\u2019s important for me to see how my work is viewed through different cultures, different people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deane and Souisri created <em>The Sultan<\/em> during their junior year. Deane directed the film and Souisri was director of photography.<\/p>\n<p>The 11-minute film is an intimate portrait of Tarik Sultan, a male belly dancer in New York struggling with self-image and making a living as an artist in our culture.<\/p>\n<p>Souisri said he was initially interested in creating a film about belly dancing because of its popularity in Algerian culture and throughout the Middle East. But as they worked on the film, it evolved into a closer examination of Sultan, not dancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of documentary,\u201d Souisri said. \u201cYou never know what you\u2019re going to end up with.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30393\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/05\/09\/wright-state-grads-documentary-to-play-at-cannes-film-festival\/dollhouse-img_0149\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30393\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30393\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/05\/dollhouse-IMG_0149-260x194.jpg\" alt=\"Yasser Souisri and Josh Deane on location\" width=\"260\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yasser Souisri and Josh Deane on location of their forthcoming film Dollhouse.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The filmmakers were especially intrigued by the fact that Sultan is a male belly dancer. \u201cWe thought, what drives someone to do something that seems so opposite to what the social norms should be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deane said.
