Some of these people have known each other for a long time, but they don\u2019t always get together like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was about networking, but it was also about supporting students. Ortiz said that about $12,000 was raised for Latino students in the Dayton area. Half of the money is designated for Latino-based scholarships at Wright State while the other half will be given to El Puente Learning Center in Dayton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe El Puente Learning Center is our pipeline for Latino students,\u201d said Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2012\/10\/05\/inaugural-alumni-speaker-series-to-feature-globe-trotting-alumna\/newsroom_alumni_logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16430\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16430\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2012\/10\/newsroom_alumni_logo-260x203.jpg\" alt=\"Logo for the Wright State Alumni Association\" width=\"260\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>Ortiz said that many of the people who attended the inaugural event vowed to spread the word, return and donate more next year. And word is spreading. A week later, he said he\u2019s receiving donations from people who could not come or didn\u2019t register but believe in the cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one else around the state is doing this. No one else to my knowledge has a Latino alumni society. We\u2019re the first,\u201d said Ortiz. \u201cWe\u2019re working on things that nobody else is even thinking about doing, and a lot of the people at the gala did not know about the things we\u2019ve been doing or our plans for the future.
