For Wright State student Megan Gillespie, getting on an elevator to make a class was a real problem if able-bodied students wouldn\u2019t make way for her.<\/p>\n<p>As director of disabilities for Student Government, Gillespie had become aware of the issue when the previous director\u2014who uses a wheelchair to be more independent\u2014complained of being late for classes when students without mobility challenges would step ahead and leave no room for him on the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>Now Gillespie was living it too\u2014although not on a permanent basis, as many students with disabilities do.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32166\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/07\/28\/new-elevator-signs-to-encourage-priority-for-students-with-disabilities\/20140728_083832\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32166\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32166\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32166\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/07\/20140728_083832-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elevator signs like the one seen here are going up across campus, encouraging the campus community to give priority elevator access to people with disabilities as well as to the elderly, pregnant women and people with small children.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think the community is kind of oblivious to things like that. They\u2019re just not aware that other people might be limited to things that they\u2019re not limited to because they don\u2019t deal with that on an everyday basis,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just really about being considerate and realizing that everyone is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result of efforts by Student Government, elevator signs are going up across campus, encouraging the campus community to give priority elevator access to people with disabilities as well as to the elderly, pregnant women and people with small children. The decals will go on 20 to 30 of the most heavily used elevators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make this very noticeable for able-bodied people,\u201d said Kyle Powell, president-elect of Student Government. \u201cThis doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get on the elevator. It\u2019s just to make you think about it before you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tom Webb, director of Wright State\u2019s Office of Disability Services, said the elevator signage is an important initiative.<\/p>\n<p>He said some students who arrive at Wright State may for the first time be interacting with students with disabilities or mobility issues and are not sure how to conduct themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s eye-opening to them in a lot of ways,\u201d Webb said. \u201cThere has got to be some push for awareness there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State has a national reputation for providing access to people with disabilities.
