What he couldn\u2019t fend off was the tsetse fly, whose bite can cause sometimes fatal African sleeping sickness.<\/p>\n<p>And it was a tsetse fly that bit Emily Diller, a Wright State University <a href=\"http:\/\/cecs.wright.edu\/programs\/masters\/bme\">biomedical engineering<\/a> student who was in Malawi to deliver and install a state-of-the-art X-ray system to a health clinic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was terrifying; I was freaking out,\u201d Diller recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The bloody blister on her hip produced by the bite lasted four weeks, but thankfully the tsetse fly was not carrying the parasite that causes sleeping sickness.<\/p>\n<p>Diller is fine, and she chalks it up as part of what turned out to be an exciting, educational, humanitarian adventure that further fired her passion to help people in need.<\/p>\n<p>Diller grew up in Tucson, Ariz., and at age 9 moved to Ohio when her father, a minister, was transferred to a Dayton church. She attended Wright State and got a two-year certificate in Spanish and French before changing her major to biomedical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been good in math and science,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I saw biomedical engineering as a different way for me to be creative and use that creativity I have to solve problems and help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31952\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/07\/18\/malawi-magic\/emily-diller-13948-243\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31952\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31952\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31952\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/07\/emily-diller-13948-243-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Engineering student Emily Diller\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Diller also works with Engineers Without Borders, which supports development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After obtaining her bachelor\u2019s degree, Diller began work on her master\u2019s. And she currently works as a graduate research assistant for Caroline Cao, professor of biomedical, industrial and human factors engineering.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Diller and three other Wright State students left for Malawi along with Thomas Hangartner, chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cecs.wright.edu\/bie\/\">Department of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering<\/a>, to deliver and install an X-ray system in a clinic at St. Ann\u2019s Hospital in Chilumba.<\/p>\n<p>The X-ray imager was designed by Wright State biomedical engineering students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy using a digital camera, they changed the image receptors so it would be able to pick up on the X-ray wavelength,\u201d Diller said. \u201cThis is the first one that\u2019s been in Malawi. Having a digital system is a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t require the maintenance of conventional X-ray systems, which can mean costly and time-consuming trips for parts and supplies. There is also no need for films and developing chemicals, so the project is in itself self-sustainable. At the clinic, it is used primarily to identify bone fractures and tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi is a tiny nation of about 17 million people in southeast Africa. It is one of the world\u2019s least developed countries, with a largely rural population heavily dependent on agriculture. Its people have a relatively low life expectancy and high infant mortality.<\/p>\n<p>For the 24-year-old Diller, the trip to Malawi was her first taste of a foreign culture. Her parents had traveled to Ghana and South Africa over the years to do missionary work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had always grown up with those stories of their life,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is something that is really interesting and something you want to experience for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Diller on the trip were Wright State biomedical engineering major Megan Ater, chemistry major Nhi Lam and Bill Conley, who graduated from Wright State with a biology degree.<\/p>\n<p>Diller calls her experience in Malawi \u201clife-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a different realness I experienced in the people of Malawi,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are so focused on the here and the now and the day and getting the food that they need for their family for that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diller said strangers on the street would invite her to their homes to meet their families and have a meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you know these people don\u2019t have a lot of resources,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is this different level of being genuine because you are another human.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31956\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/07\/18\/malawi-magic\/emily-diller-13948-266\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31956\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31956\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31956\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/07\/emily-diller-13948-266-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"Malawi cultural items\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Items Emily Diller brought back from her trip to Malawi that represent various aspects of the African nation&#8217;s culture.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the most surrealistic experiences of her nearly four-week stay was when her group went for a hike to Lion\u2019s Point, near where the party of Scottish missionary Robert Laws was attacked by a lion in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>As they walked along, they began to hear hymns that echoed off the hills and fields.
