{"id":32305,"date":"2014-08-04T10:46:51","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T14:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=32305"},"modified":"2014-08-04T11:30:09","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T15:30:09","slug":"wright-state-research-institute-continues-growth-with-new-talent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/04\/wright-state-research-institute-continues-growth-with-new-talent\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State Research Institute continues growth with new talent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_32307\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/04\/wright-state-research-institute-continues-growth-with-new-talent\/michael-deis\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32307\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32307\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32307\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/08\/Michael-Deis-508x342.jpg\" alt=\"WSRI's Michael Deis\" width=\"460\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Deis, former director of the Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory and a Wright State alumnus, has joined the Wright State Research Institute as director of advanced research and development.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The head of the Air Force\u2019s effort to develop science and technology in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance is now heading up an effort to expand programs at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wsri.wright.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wright State Research Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Deis, former director of the Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), has been hired as director of advanced research and development at the institute. He assumed his new position July 28.<\/p>\n<p>Deis is part of a new stream of talent flowing into the institute. Others recently hired include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">James Schmitz, a remote sensing expert who worked at AFRL and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, will assist with programs on unmanned aerial systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Kerry Dungan, previously a senior staff engineer at Dynamics Research Corp. in Columbus, where he researched, designed and implemented signal processing and imaging methods for radar using high-performance computers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">John Nehrbass, an expert in computational electromagnetics, signal processing and high-performance computers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2011\/09\/15\/wright-state-led-initiative-to-create-250-aerospace-defense-jobs\/newsroom_wsri\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7690\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7690\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2011\/09\/newsroom_wsri-260x204.jpg\" alt=\"Wright State Research Institute Logo\" width=\"260\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>\u201cThese exceptional engineers and scientists will support the Wright State Research Institute in pursuit of its mission to provide innovative, customer-focused research solutions in the human and health sciences,\u201d said Jason Parker, director of WSRI.<\/p>\n<p>Sprawling through a 35,000-square-foot Beavercreek facility near the Wright State campus and directly across from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the research institute applies basic science to quickly address pressing, real-world problems. It serves as a gateway to expertise at Wright State, marshaling resources from the university and elsewhere to solve problems ranging from combat fatigue to the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In the seven years since its inception, WSRI has a $20 million portfolio and nearly 70 scientists, engineers and other staff focused on human sciences and health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is a lot to be done in bringing in more research,\u201d said Deis. \u201cWe\u2019ve just barely scratched the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deis has a bachelor\u2019s degree in engineering from Wright State, a master\u2019s in systems engineering from the University of Florida and a doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>At AFRL, he oversaw an annual budget of more than $850 million and the activities of about 1,300 scientists, engineers and others.<\/p>\n<p>Deis hopes to use his experience at Wright-Patterson and his contacts in government and industry to bring in new research for WSRI, focusing especially on the Army and Navy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing an alumnus of Wright State, it\u2019s kind of neat to come back and help grow the institute,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t think of a better opportunity for what I wanted to do post-Civil Service. It\u2019s exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmitz obtained his bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut, the University of Lowell and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, respectively.
