{"id":33994,"date":"2014-10-27T09:45:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T13:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=33994"},"modified":"2022-09-28T10:36:53","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T14:36:53","slug":"wright-state-continues-wwi-project-with-holidays-in-heartland-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/10\/27\/wright-state-continues-wwi-project-with-holidays-in-heartland-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State continues WWI project with &#8216;Holidays in Heartland&#8217; concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wright State\u2019s School of Music will kick off the holiday season, honor veterans and remember World War I with the popular \u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d concert.<\/p>\n<p>A Miami Valley tradition for almost 20 years, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/events\/holidays-heartland-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holidays in the Heartland<\/a>\u201d will be presented Sunday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schuster Performing Arts Center in downtown Dayton.<\/p>\n<p>Hank Dahlman, D.M.A., Wright State director of choral studies and artistic director of \u201cHolidays in the Heartland,\u201d described this year\u2019s concert as an \u201cimportant event, celebrating our veterans, and in fact, all who are serving or who have served in defense of our country throughout it\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be a wonderful concert of important music from the heartland focusing on the rich musical heritage of World War I,\u201d Dahlman said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34006\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/10\/holidays-12551-022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34006\" class=\"size-large wp-image-34006\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/10\/holidays-12551-022-508x340.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d holiday stage\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright State continues its World War I project, while kicking off the holiday season and honoring veterans, with the popular \u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d concert Nov. 2 in the Schuster Performing Arts Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The concert is part of \u201cA Long, Long Way: Echoes of the Great War,\u201d a yearlong project organized by Wright State\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/celia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ohio Center of Excellence in Collaborative Education, Leadership and Innovation in the Arts (CELIA)<\/a>, a unit of the <a href=\"http:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Liberal Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project presents music, poetry, exhibits and film to inspire understanding of WWI. It involves the creative work of faculty and students from the Departments of History and English Language and Literatures and the School of Music.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece of \u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d is a selection of popular songs and classical music from World War I interspersed with commentary from Paul Lockhart, Ph.D., professor of history and CELIA Senior Fellow.<\/p>\n<p>Like other elements of the WWI project, the concert will &#8220;remind our audience why it is that the First World War should matter to them as citizens of the world, as citizens of this nation, as citizens of our region,&#8221; Lockhart said.<\/p>\n<p>Music faculty members Steve Aldredge on piano, Frank Cox on cello and Tom Sobieski on violin will perform Maurice Ravel\u2019s &#8220;Piano Trio,&#8221; which he completed before joining the French Army at the start of the war.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34007\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/10\/holidays-12551-152.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34007\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34007\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/10\/holidays-12551-152-260x234.jpg\" alt=\"Patriotic \u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d stage\" width=\"260\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The centerpiece of \u201cHolidays in the Heartland\u201d is a selection of popular songs and classical music from World War I with commentary from history professor Paul Lockhart.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Wright State Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Jackson Leung, will perform \u201cJupiter, the Bringer of Jollity\u201d from English composer Gustav Holst\u2019s &#8220;The Planets,&#8221; which he wrote during the war.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will also feature music from the \u201cheartland in war and peace,\u201d with songs from the American Revolution, Civil War and the end of the 19th century, as well as patriotic tunes honoring military veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The concert includes performances by Wright State\u2019s nationally recognized choirs, the Collegiate Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, and the Kettering Children\u2019s Choir.
