{"id":34330,"date":"2014-11-17T16:10:49","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T20:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=34330"},"modified":"2014-11-17T16:10:49","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T20:10:49","slug":"raiderthon-chalks-up-second-successful-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2014\/11\/17\/raiderthon-chalks-up-second-successful-fundraiser\/","title":{"rendered":"Raiderthon chalks up second successful fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_34332\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/raiderthon-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34332\" class=\"size-large wp-image-34332\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/raiderthon-1-508x508.jpg\" alt=\"Raiderthon fundraising results\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The second Raiderthon dance marathon topped its fundraising goal, bringing in\u00a0more than $61,000 for Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Music was thumping, students were grooving, kids were cheering and charity was overflowing.<\/p>\n<p>This was the scene at Saturday\u2019s immensely successful second annual Raiderthon, a dance marathon that brought the Wright State community together to raise money for and awareness of local children fighting life-threatening illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the 15-hour event, participants had raised $61,018 for Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital, topping last year\u2019s total of $50,389.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34334\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/14775-093.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34334\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34334\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/14775-093-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"Dancing at Raiderthon\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students, staff, faculty and community members flooded the Student Union Apollo Room for nonstop dancing, games and other activities.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the event, hundreds of students, staff, faculty and community members flooded the Student Union Apollo Room for nonstop dancing and celebrating. But dancing wasn\u2019t the only activity on the Raiderthon docket. A myriad of lively activities ranging from Harry Potter trivia to a pizza eating contest to a demonstration by a hypnotist took place.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Kucirka, president of Raiderthon, said that throughout the event, no one lost sight of the real reason for dancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids and their families are always the heart of Raiderthon,\u201d said Kucirka. \u201cThey kept us going and gave us our purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children whose lives have been saved by Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital, like siblings 10-year-old Ella and 8-year-old Jude Bowman, joined participants on the dance floor. Ella beat cancer thanks to Dayton Children\u2019s, and Jude is being treated there for a neurological disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Dayton Children\u2019s provides care every year for more than 290,000 infants, children and teens. The hospital offers everything from checkups to specialty clinics to intensive care and surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>Kucirka said a majority of the raised money will be spent on giraffe beds in the neonatal intensive care units, where premature or ill infants are cared for.<\/p>\n<p>Each hour of the event was dedicated to celebrate the lives and triumphs of 16 miracle kids and their families. Throughout the night Ella, Jude and other miracle kids shared their inspirational stories of overcoming medical obstacles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34336\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/raiderthon-14775-048.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34336\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34336\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/raiderthon-14775-048-260x172.jpg\" alt=\"miracle kids on stage\" width=\"260\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Each hour of Raiderthon celebrated the lives and triumphs of 16 miracle kids and their families.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was blown away by the sense of community Wright State generated for the event,\u201d said Kayla Muncie, who was at Raiderthon for the full 15 hours and was exhausted at the time of this interview.<\/p>\n<p>She said Raiderthon has grown into something huge since she attended last year\u2019s event as a freshman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just so proud to be a Raider and to be here for the kids,\u201d Muncie said. \u201cThere really is no greater cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright State\u2019s Greek community also turned up in scores to support the cause.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Buford, a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, said it was amazing experience to support children and help save their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that we as a community have met and exceeded our goal two years in row speaks volumes to the success of the event,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kucirka said she was floored when she and the Raiderthon committee revealed to a cheering crowd at the end of the event that the dance marathon had raised $61,018.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34337\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/14775-066.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34337\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34337\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2014\/11\/14775-066-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"Raiderthon stage banter\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raiderthon participants listened to live bands and DJs, line danced, belly danced and did Zumba.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEveryone in the room started chanting FTK (For The Kids),\u201d she said. \u201cI stood onstage unable to move because I was in awe of the passion behind the chant. I have to thank our miracle families. We wouldn&#8217;t exist without their support.
