{"id":34954,"date":"2015-01-20T15:38:23","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T19:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=34954"},"modified":"2015-05-29T12:18:26","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T16:18:26","slug":"wright-state-honors-martin-luther-king-jr-with-march-remembrance-of-nonviolence-principles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/01\/20\/wright-state-honors-martin-luther-king-jr-with-march-remembrance-of-nonviolence-principles\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright State honors Martin Luther King Jr. with march, remembrance of nonviolence principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_34957\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/01\/15034-030.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34957\" class=\"size-large wp-image-34957\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/01\/15034-030-508x337.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Luther King Jr. march through campus\" width=\"460\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students, faculty and staff marched through the Wright State campus as part of the university&#8217;s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday week celebration.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s principles of nonviolence were remembered at Wright State as part of the university\u2019s annual unity march to commemorate the achievements of the late civil rights leader.<\/p>\n<p>The Jan. 20 event included students, faculty and staff who marched from Millett Hall and made stops at Allyn Hall, the Student Union and the Creative Arts Center in what were called the four corners of peace and justice.<\/p>\n<p>The group carried signs emblazoned with phrases such as \u201cKeep the Dream\u201d and \u201cAnything is Possible if You Believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At each stop, several of King\u2019s nonviolence principles were highlighted. At the Allyn Hall stop, participants discussed ways to change the community for the better such as taking personal responsibility for each other.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Willis, a psychology\/biology major from Dayton, said it is crucial to remind people of King\u2019s achievements because it shows how much progress society has made, but how hard that was.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34956\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/01\/15034-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34956\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34956\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/01\/15034-011-260x172.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Luther King Jr. rally\" width=\"260\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marchers stopped at several places on campus to highlight several of Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s principles of nonviolence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that we don\u2019t have to respond with violence,\u201d Willis said. \u201cI feel like people talk about it a lot, but they don\u2019t ever learn from it. They don\u2019t ever figure out how to take these lessons and implement them in our community in a way that helps further us in our causes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>King, a clergyman, activist and prominent leader of the African-American civil rights movement, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial discrimination. He was assassinated in 1968. In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a federal holiday.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 21, Wright State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wright.edu\/bolinga-black-cultural-resources-center\" target=\"_blank\">Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center<\/a> will show the documentary film \u201cLetter from Birmingham Jail\u201d from noon to 2 p.m. in the Millett Hall Atrium.<\/p>\n<p>King wrote the letter on April 16, 1963, defending nonviolent resistance to racism. It became an important text for the civil rights movement.
