{"id":35371,"date":"2015-02-16T11:30:25","date_gmt":"2015-02-16T16:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=35371"},"modified":"2015-02-16T11:33:12","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T16:33:12","slug":"ysi-donates-water-testing-equipment-to-wright-state-education-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/02\/16\/ysi-donates-water-testing-equipment-to-wright-state-education-students\/","title":{"rendered":"YSI donates water testing equipment to Wright State education students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_35373\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/02\/15149-130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35373\" class=\"size-large wp-image-35373\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/02\/15149-130-508x338.jpg\" alt=\"Students working with pH meters\" width=\"460\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Ashly Avery, James Smith and Athena Zois work with donated pH meters that will help Wright State education students develop skills critical to teaching how to preserve water quality.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wright State students developing skills critical to teaching how to preserve water quality got a boost from a Yellow Springs company, which donated 10 pH meters to the university.<\/p>\n<p>The instruments were delivered to <a href=\"http:\/\/education-human-services.wright.edu\/teacher-education\" target=\"_blank\">early and middle childhood education majors<\/a> at a lab in the <a href=\"http:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">College of Science and Mathematics<\/a>\u2019 Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences by YSI, which makes sensors, instruments, software and data collection platforms for environmental water quality monitoring and testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only are they going to get to see the different pH ranges, but it also gives hands-on experience with instruments,\u201d said Chris Cushman, assistant product manager for water quality systems at YSI. \u201cYou can read about it in textbooks, you can see it done, but to actually get your hands on it is a major part of the learning process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Hundley, Ph.D., <a href=\"http:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/earth-enviro-sciences\" target=\"_blank\">earth and environmental sciences<\/a> lecturer, said that having been exposed to the technology at Wright State, the students may use pH meters in future classrooms when working with young students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35372\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/02\/15149-037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35372\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35372\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/02\/15149-037-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Cushman using pH meter\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Cushman, assistant product manager for water quality systems at YSI and a Wright State graduate, helps a student use a donated pH meter.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cushman said pH is the most fundamental, most measured parameter when it comes to water quality simply because it reveals so much information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of pH-dependent processes in the environment,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can tell you what processes are going on in your wastewater treatment plant. It can also tell you if there is contamination present, which is why they measure it so much in streams. And it is important in the production of drinks, production of bread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>YSI recently released the ProDSS, a sophisticated system with titanium sensors and digital technology that not only measures pH, but also dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature and depth.
