{"id":35968,"date":"2015-03-19T09:20:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T14:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/?p=35968"},"modified":"2022-09-26T10:05:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T14:05:57","slug":"womens-history-month-residency-to-feature-trans-activist-and-biologist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/2015\/03\/19\/womens-history-month-residency-to-feature-trans-activist-and-biologist\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s History Month residency to feature trans activist and biologist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_35969\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/03\/julia-serano-FB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35969\" class=\"size-large wp-image-35969\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/03\/julia-serano-FB-508x468.jpg\" alt=\"Julia Serano\" width=\"460\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Serano, a transgender activist, biologist and spoken-word performer, will visit Wright State March 24-26 as the Women\u2019s History Month Scholar-in-Residence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Julia Serano, Ph.D., a transgender activist, biologist and spoken-word performer, will visit Wright State University from March 24-26 as the Women\u2019s History Month Scholar-in-Residence.<\/p>\n<p>Serano\u2019s visit is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/administration\/womensctr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women\u2019s Center<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/liberal-arts.wright.edu\/womens-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women\u2019s Studies Program<\/a>, which host a scholar or artist every March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerano provides students, faculty and staff the unique opportunity to interact with a well-established and cutting-edge scholar who is also a poet and musician,\u201d said Hope Jennings, Ph.D., Women\u2019s Studies Program director, and Kelli Zaytoun, Ph.D., Women\u2019s Center interim director. \u201cShe is both a scholar- and-artist-in-residence, which should make for a dynamic residency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serano has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Columbia University and was a researcher at the University of California-Berkeley in evolutionary and developmental biology for 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>She is the author of two books, including \u201cWhipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity,\u201d which describes Serano\u2019s personal story and her experiences and observations both pre- and post-transition, and gives a representation of trans women in the media, pop culture and health sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhipping Girl\u201d was selected as the Women\u2019s Center\u2019s spring reading discussion and was also assigned to students in the Women\u2019s Studies course Introduction to Sexuality Studies.<\/p>\n<p>During her residency, Serano will join the Women\u2019s Center reading discussion group on Wednesday, March 25, and later will visit the Introduction to Sexuality Studies class to discuss her book and answer questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about having Julia here because of her truly interdisciplinary background as a transgender activist, an evolutionary and biology researcher and a spoken-word performer,\u201d Jennings and Zaytoun said. \u201cBecause she comes from a variety of insights and areas of expertise, we hope that students, faculty and other community members will gain a better understanding of the complexities of trans experiences, as well as how to build more inclusive social justice movements through forming coalitional strategies and partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/03\/bigexcluded.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35971\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/03\/bigexcluded-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Excluded&quot; cover\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Serano will give the Women\u2019s History Month keynote address on Tuesday, March 24, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Millett Hall Atrium.<\/p>\n<p>She will discuss her second book, \u201cExcluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive,\u201d which aims to empower people to challenge sexism and marginalization within various social justice movements. Immediately following the keynote address, she will sign copies of her books, which will be available for purchase.<\/p>\n<p>As part of her three-day campus visit, Serano will meet with members of the Rainbow student organization, faculty and staff members of Allies and Women\u2019s Studies affiliate faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Serano&#8217;s residency will conclude with a poetry and activism workshop on Thursday, March 26, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in E156 Student Union.<\/p>\n<p>Serano will share her experiences as an activist and spoken-word artist. She will perform some of her poetry and lead a discussion on the intersection of art and activism.<\/p>\n<p>Space is limited and registration is required.
