She is pictured with Roxy at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center, where the research was conducted.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dogs in animal shelters face high levels of health-threatening, behavior-altering stress that can keep them from being adopted and lead to them being euthanized. But petting the animals for as little as 15 minutes a day can change all that, according to Wright State University research.<\/p>\n<p>The research was conducted by neuroscience master\u2019s student Regina Willen under the direction of <a href=\"http:\/\/science-math.wright.edu\/psychology\" target=\"_blank\">psychology<\/a> professors Michael Hennessy, Ph.D., and Patricia Schiml, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research isn\u2019t just improving lives, it\u2019s saving lives,\u201d said Mark Kumpf, director of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. \u201cFifteen minutes can save a dog\u2019s life. It can make that animal a better candidate for a new home. And we have proven it scientifically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hennessey began researching the effects of stress on shelter dogs 20 years ago. He and fellow researchers discovered that the levels of cortisol \u2014 the dogs\u2019 stress hormone \u2014 were elevated when the animals were in a shelter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stressors known to have the greatest effect on cortisol levels are exactly the kind dogs encounter in shelters. These include separation from social partners, uncertainty in the environment and exposure to novel places,\u201d Hennessy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis environment is very high stress for dogs,\u201d added Willen. \u201cIt\u2019s very loud; there are so many dogs barking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>High stress levels can increase disease, stifle appetite, induce anxiety and depression and create abnormal and aggressive behavior.<\/p>\n<p>During the summers, undergraduate Wright State students have helped with the studies at the shelter to get research experience. Kumpf said the student researchers, clad in white lab coats, look like physicians making their rounds.<\/p>\n<p>Willen, who grew up in Trenton, Ohio, got her bachelor\u2019s degree in zoology from Miami University and is pursuing her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wright.edu\/neuroscience-cell-biology-and-physiology\/academics\/master-of-science-in-physiology-and-neuroscience\" target=\"_blank\">master\u2019s in neuroscience<\/a> at Wright State. She has completed her research and is currently writing her thesis.<\/p>\n<p>A dog lover her entire life, Willen has worked at many animal shelters over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The Wright State studies indicated that the dogs\u2019 stress levels would remain high for three days before gradually coming down.<\/p>\n<p>Willen found that petting would reduce the dogs\u2019 stress levels, but only temporarily. By the next day, the higher stress levels would return, requiring another petting session.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36445\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/animal-shelter-15372_169.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36445\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36445\" src=\"http:\/\/webapp2.wright.edu\/web1\/newsroom\/files\/2015\/04\/animal-shelter-15372_169-260x176.jpg\" alt=\"Regina Willen and Michael Hennessy\" width=\"260\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Regina Willen conducted the research under the direction of psychology professors Michael Hennessy and Patricia Schiml (not pictured).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Willen also found that reducing petting sessions from 30 minutes a day to 15 reduced stress levels just as effectively. That finding could result in more dogs being petted or the need for fewer volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>Petting sessions involve taking the dogs out of their kennels and bringing them to a quiet place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou pet them and love on them,\u201d Willen said. \u201cThat\u2019s all they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that volunteers will see that if they pet the dog they are actually physiologically doing something for that dog,\u201d Hennessey added.<\/p>\n<p>Willen found that stray dogs respond better to the petting \u2014 with lowered cortisol levels \u2014 than do dogs that are surrendered to the shelter by their owners.<\/p>\n<p>Stress levels are likely higher in owner-surrendered dogs because they come from a home environment, are accustomed to some petting and now feel abandoned by their families. The finding suggests the possible use of different treatment for owner-surrendered dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Willen also found a way to measure stress levels over the longer term by extracting cortisol from the dogs\u2019 hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCortisol is like our translation software,\u201d Kumpf said. \u201cCortisol doesn\u2019t lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years ago, shelter officials were only able to find homes for about 25 percent of the dogs. Last year, it was 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The research findings have led to changes in both veterinary procedures and behavioral management at the shelter. Dogs that are difficult to adopt are given three extra days in a behavioral modification program. In addition, Willen provides the dogs with toys, blankets and even classical music to reduce the stressfulness of the shelter environment.<\/p>\n<p>Of the dogs that initially didn\u2019t pass the criteria for adoption and were put through a second round of treatment, 75 percent ended up being adopted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther shelters across the country are asking us how we\u2019re doing this,\u201d said Mick Sagester, shelter operations supervisor. \u201cThey are definitely looking at a lot of things Wright State is doing here.
